Support Tim Christie:

Tim, a talented Kiwi artist, is showing his support through creating a bespoke hand-crafted piece of art for Create for Dementia.

“This is a one-off piece that speaks to the subject of Dementia incorporating techniques I've never attempted before,” Tim says.

“Using a tree 'wheel' (the crosscut of a trunk) as my canvas is a way in which you can literally see time recorded, in this case, via the growth lines - large cross section indicates an old tree.

“Drilling around 2000 holes of varying diameter into the surface reveals the image of a human head. The dot configuration I'm using is based on a pattern relating to a specific sequence of numbers, first proposed by Fibonacci, an Italian mathematician c. 1170. The visualisation of this sequence, known as the 'Fibonacci Spiral', replicates growth progressions found in nature and cosmological creation.

“From complex flower petal configurations and nautilus shells to beautiful galaxial formations, like our own Milky Way, this pattern is the rhythm of life decoded. Combining this design with a human form and fashioning it out of tree wheel like brogue tells a multi-layered story of life, with the cracks and holes suggesting degradation and gaps in the mind as we age, and what can happen with dementia.

“Like much of my art, close up the design dominates, and it can be difficult to decipher the subject matter. Moving further away there is a moment of discovery as the imagery emerges.

Tim’s bespoke hand-crafted piece of art using a crosscut of wood from a tree trunk is painted with Resene Zylone Sheen tinted to Resene Black White.

“Donate to my page to support this project and you could win this piece of art for your home or office. The higher your contribution the greater the chance of securing this unique piece of art. ALL proceeds will go to Alzheimer’s New Zealand who provide vital services and support for people living with dementia, including:

  • Critical research efforts in the prevention of dementia
  • Education programmes on caring for the diagnosed
  • Emotional support for families via local Alzheimers groups
  • Raise awareness and reduce the stigma of dementia
  • Advocate with government for more help and support

Most of us know or have known someone with dementia. Around 70,000 Kiwis are living with dementia today and that's expected to almost triple by 2050.

It only takes a minute and any money you can give (no matter how large or small) will go a long way to helping me reach my target.

Create for Dementia ends June 30th so hurry to show your support today!
