Egg-cellent DIY Christmas trees

03 Dec 2025

It’s that crafty Christmassy time of year, and this easy egg carton Christmas tree DIY is a great one for the kids to do! They can choose their favourite Resene testpot colours and make a fun weekend or after-school project out of it.

You will need:

Step 1: Start by using some scissors to cut out the middle pointy parts of an egg carton. Shape the bottom edge into curved scallops.

Step 2: For each tree, paint four parts in a single colour of your choice. Fleur used Resene Vista Blue, Dauntless, Bush, Bilbao, Gondwana and Green Leaf.

Step 3: Use a hot glue gun to glue all four egg carton pieces together, one inside the other. For the trunk, cut a stick from the garden to be about 8-10cm long and use hot glue to secure this into the bottom piece. Use a saw to cut circular rounds from a branch. Hot glue the bottom of the stick to the middle of one of these branch rounds to form a base.

Step 4: Finish by adding some shimmering touches to the scalloped edges of each tier. For this, Fleur used Resene FX Metallic paint in the shade Resene Gold Dust, and she painted the trunk and base with Resene Rebel.
