Why white and wood is a forever combo
28 May 2026
There’s a reason why timber paired with white creates a timeless design for residential homes. Wood brings warmth, texture and character, while white keeps things looking fresh and light.
The trick to the right pairing is in both balance and preference. Lighter wood can feel more coastal and modern, while darker wood can add contrast and a more grounded, architectural mood. Let’s take a look at some designs and how you can achieve these at home using Resene Colorwood and Woodsman stains alongside timeless whites.
Coastal calm

For bright, serene spaces like this open-plan dining and kitchen, use a warm base of Resene Half Bianca paired with lighter Colorwood stains like Rock Salt, Breathe Easy or Bask. Check out the We Speak Beach range if you’re after a coastal or beach-inspired style.

A warm welcome

When paired with a crisp classic, like Resene Black White on these villa walls, timber brings instant warmth and character. The rich wooden door and trims create a strong, welcoming frame, giving the entry a sense of craftsmanship and timeless appeal. Try a base of Black White paired with Colorwood shades like Meranti, Oregon and Natural for a warm, classic feel.

Framed in style

These window frames were stained in Resene Woodsman Bark, with the exterior in the off-white Resene Bone. This combination created the homeowner’s vision of a ‘Tuscan farmhouse’ style exterior. Use similar Woodsman stains like Oiled Cedar, Kwila or Jarrah Tree if this look catches your eye – or check out the recently released Woodsman Natural Wood Oil colours, which can be used on both interior and exterior timbers for the most natural look.

Curb appeal with contrast

This home uses both paint and timber to define and emphasise its structural form and angles, which mimic the natural landscape in the alpine region. The exterior is painted in Resene Half White Pointer, a serene white with hints of both beige and grey. For darker contrasting stains, try Resene Woodsman Natural Wood Oil stains on weatherboards or vertical cladding in shades like Timberland, Dark Oak and Bark.
