Three egg-cellent Easter DIYs to dive into this weekend
31 Mar 2022
Easter brings with it an abundance of soft pastel colours, chocolate bunnies and painted eggs. If you’re hoping to deck out your home with a little Easter flair, Resene has the perfect selection of DIYs for you before the long weekend hits.
Create your own hanging Easter egg treat holders
Add a bit of egg-travagance to your home and try making these treat holders.
You will need:
- Five ‘cracked’ papier mâché eggs (we found these at a craft store, but if you can’t find this type, you could easily cut open normal papier mâché with a craft knife). Or create your own papier mache using balloons, paper and glue.
- Paintbrush, including a thin artist’s paintbrush
- Resene testpots in your choice of colours; Fleur used Resene Apache, Resene Gold Dust, Resene Retro, Resene Mai Tai, Resene Lucky Point, Resene Red Berry and Resene Belladonna
Step 1: Start by painting the inside of each of the eggs with Resene Apache. Once this has dried, paint over this with two coats of Resene Gold Dust metallic.
Step 2: Paint the outside of the eggs each in a different colour. Fleur used Resene Retro, Resene Mai Tai, Resene Lucky Point, Resene Red Berry and Resene Belladonna.
Step 3: Use a thin artist’s paintbrush to paint on small stars with Resene Gold Dust.
Step 4: Fill each of the eggs with small chocolate Easter eggs and hang them in a branch in a vase as a centrepiece at a table. Eggs painted in Resene Apache, Resene Gold Dust, Resene Retro, Resene Mai Tai, Resene Lucky Point, Resene Red Berry and Resene Belladonna.

Create your own Easter egg garland
Hop to it and get crafting this adorable garland, sure to brighten any space and bring a bit of Easter cheer to a room.
You will need:
- 20 papier mâché Easter eggs (or more if you want your garland to be longer)
- Paintbrush
- Electric drill
- Long needle
- String
- Ribbon
- Resene testpots in your choice of colours, Fleur used Resene Olive Green, Resene Paddock, Resene Cinnamon, Resene Soulful and Resene Persian Red
Step 1: For this project you need some papier mâché Easter eggs. Fleur used 20 eggs but you could use more to make your garland bigger.
Step 2: Divide the eggs equally into five groups and paint each group one of your chosen colours. Fleur used Resene Olive Green, Resene Paddock, Resene Cinnamon, Resene Soulful and Resene Persian Red.
Step 3: Make a hole in both ends of each egg. Fleur found an electric drill did a quick job of this. Use a long needle to thread string through the eggs. If you don’t have a long needle, you could use a crochet hook or a skewer to poke it through.
Step four: Hang the garland up and tie on some ribbon in a coordinating colour at even intervals along the garland. Easter eggs painted in Resene Olive Green, Resene Paddock, Resene Cinnamon, Resene Soulful and Resene Persian Red.

Create your own Easter egg treat bags
If you’re hoping to play Easter Bunny this year, these treat bags make a gorgeous addition for storing chocolate eggs.
You will need:
- Paper bags
- Paintbrush, including a thin artist’s paintbrush
- Scissors
- String
- Resene testpots in your choice of colours, Fleur used Resene Shilo, Resene Rusty Nail, Resene Brown Bramble, Resene Black, Resene Rouge and Resene White
Step 1: Use three brown bags and paint each in your choice of colour. Fleur used Resene Shilo, Resene Rusty Nail and Resene Brown Bramble.
Step 2: Use scissors to cut the top of each bag to form ears.
Step 3: Use a thin craft artist paintbrush to paint on the face with Resene Black.
Step 4: Paint on the nose with Resene Rouge and two teeth in Resene White. Carefully go around the teeth with more Resene Black.
Step 5: Once all the paint is dry, fill each bag with your favourite Easter treats, tie the ears together with some string or ribbon (you may need to manipulate the ears into position a bit), and give to your loved ones.
