Pot-luck skies: Paint your own sunrise and sunset plant pots
11 Jun 2025
Bring the beauty of golden hour into your home and forget winter with these sunrise and sunset-inspired plant pots. Using your favourite bold Resene testpot colours and a bit of blending magic, you can create a pair of stacked planters that capture the dreamy tones of dawn and dusk.
You will need:
- 4 ceramic plant pots
- Sandpaper
- Resene Sureseal
- Paintbrush
- Pot plants
- Small jar lid
- Pencil
- Industrial strength adhesive
- Plants
- Resene testpot paints in your chosen colours. For the sunrise (big pot), Fleur used Resene Kashmir Blue, Resene Grapevine, Resene Kingfisher Daisy, Resene Glamour Puss, Resene Rock Spray, Resene Roxy, Resene Bunting and Resene Pirate Gold. For the sunset (small pot), Fleur used Resene Seachange, Resene Pirate Gold, Resene Roxy, Resene Rock Spray and Resene Waterloo
Step 1:Start by giving the ceramic pots a sand with a high grit sandpaper. Wipe away any dust then prime the pots with one coat of Resene Waterborne Sureseal.
Step 2:To paint the top pots, add your bands of colour from top to bottom, working quickly so that the paint stays wet and you can blend the colours together.
For the sunrise pot (big) Fleur used Resene Kashmir Blue for the sky, Resene Grapevine and Resene Kingfisher Daisy for the purple clouds and Resene Glamour Puss, Resene Rock Spray and Resene Roxy for the rest of the sunrise colours. For the sunset pot (small) she used Resene Seachange for the sky and Resene Pirate Gold, Resene Roxy and Resene Rock Spray for the sunset colours.
Step 3: To paint the sea on the bottom pots, Fleur used (big pot) Resene Bunting, Resene Kingfisher Daisy and Resene Grapevine. For the sunset (small pot) she did a very subtle colour change with a small band of Resene Waterloo at the horizon merging into a sea of Resene Seachange. Let all the paint dry.
Step 4: For the suns, trace around a small jar lid with a pencil on to both of the top pots. Fleur painted the sunrise sun in Resene Pirate Gold and the sunset sun in Resene Roxy.
Note: Get as creative – embellish your scenes as much as you like with clouds, flying birds and sunshine reflections on the water on the bottom pots.
Remove any soft feet pads from the bottom of the pots and glue the two sets of pots together with industrial strength adhesive suitable for using on ceramics.
When the glue has dried, add your plants and enjoy!
