Hooked on the tropics: DIY palm tree hooks
23 Jul 2025
Whether it’s in a garage, bedroom, laundry or hallway, you can never have enough storage for your belongings, especially all the small things that often get thrown over chairs and tables. These fun palm tree coat hooks are easy to make and will save you lots of money compared to designer store bought coat racks. We painted ours in gorgeous Resene greens, which go so well with beige and off-white walls!
You will need:
- A large piece of MDF board – 4.75mm thick, 1200cm long and 60cm wide
- 3x pieces of dowel – 8cm long and 2.5cm wide
- Palm tree shape (off the internet or hand drawn)
- Paintbrush
- Pencil
- Ruler
- Jigsaw
- Screws
- Resene testpots in your favourite tropical hues. We used Resene Waiouru, Resene Finch and Resene Frontier
Step 1: Draw your palm tree shapes onto your MDF board in pencil.
Step 2: Cut out the palm tree shapes using a jigsaw and give a light sand around any rough edges. Wipe away any dust.
Step 3:Measure and cut your dowel so you have three pieces which are 8cm long and 2.5cm wide.
Step 4:Paint your palm trees in your chosen Resene colours. We used Resene Waiouru, Resene Finch and Resene Frontier.
Step 5:Paint the three pieces of dowel in the same colours to match your palm trees – or you can paint them in other colours for a fun contrast.
Step 6: Drill holes through the back of the tree trunks and insert screws from the back. Twist the painted dowel pieces onto the screws of each palm tree.
Step 7: Screw your palm trees to the wall or use hanging hooks on the back of each tree to attach to the wall.
Wall painted in Resene Half Doeskin.
