Backyard fun – Yahtzee dice

13 Mar 2026

Based on the popular indoor game, this outdoor version of Yahtzee, finished in Resene Woodsman Natural, will provide your family with hours of friendly competition.

You will need:

  • Wooden fence post (we used Radiata Pine)
  • Circular saw or drop saw (you could also use a handsaw)
  • Ruler
  • Sander
  • Resene Woodsman stain testpot. We used Resene Woodsman Natural
  • Resene testpots for dots, clipboard and for bucket. We used Resene Black for dots and clipboard, and Resene Olive Green for bucket
  • Resene testpot paintbrush
  • Artists’ paintbrush
  • Stencil (optional) for guide on dots
  • Bucket
  • Clipboard

Step 1: Measure the fencepost wood into cubes and cut with saw.

Step 2: Using a sander, remove marks from sides of wood and soften all edges and angles. Clean off any sanding dust.

Step 3: Stain wood with two coats of Resene Woodsman in the tone of your choice (we used Resene Woodsman Natural). Allow to dry between coats.

Step 4: Using a stencil or something to create a round shape, mark out the dots you intend to paint on each face of the dice.

Top Tip: Did you know that the opposite sides of a dice always add up to seven?!

Step 5: Paint on dots in using a Resene testpot colour (we used Resene Black). Allow to dry.

Top Tip: For added protection, seal the dice with Resene Aquaclear
