Chime to shine: DIY boho wind chimes

22 Jan 2026

Add a little boho charm to your outdoor space with these easy DIY wind chimes. With painted terracotta pots, beads and a few simple knots, you’ll create a colourful addition to your garden that looks as good as it sounds.

You will need:

Step 1:Start by sealing the terracotta pots with one coat of Resene Aquapel and Terracotta Sealer. Once this is dry, paint on your base coat colour. Fleur used Resene Japonica, Licorice and Xanadu.

Step 2:Use a thin craft paintbrush to paint on patterns to each pot.

For the apricot coloured pot, Fleur used Resene Mexican Red, Fire, Cab Sav and Gold Dust (with a base coat of Apache).

For the blue pot, she used Resene Norwester, Vista Blue and Gold Dust (with a base coat of Apache).

For the green pot she used Resene Apache, Bush, Cab Sav and Studio.

Step 3:Make three strands of beads by threading them on to nylon. Tie a loop knot at the end of each strand. Thread thin wire through each of the nylon loops and twist the wire around itself to hold the bead strands secure. Thread a galvanised washer or nut on to the wire and loop the wire back though the washer to hold it in place.

Thread the wire through the hole in the pot and pull it through until the washer stops it. Thread on any remaining beads.

Depending on where you are going to hang the wind chime, you can either twist the end of the wire into a loop and hang it over a nail or screw, or you can leave the end long, loop it over a branch or rail and twist it back on itself.

Step 4:Hang your chimes in your garden or outdoor space and enjoy.
