How to turn toy animals into fun door stoppers
27 Aug 2025
Got a rogue door that just won’t stay put? Time to tame it with a DIY Animal Stopper! This fun and easy upcycling project transforms toy animals and a touch of Resene Metallic paint into quirky, stylish doorstops that double as conversation starters. Perfect for adding a playful touch to your hallway or crafting a budget-friendly DIY gift, these animal doorstops are equal parts practical, creative and delightfully ridiculous (in the best way).
You will need:
- Toy animals
- Wooden door stoppers (we got ours from Mitre 10)
- Resene testpots – we used Resene Metallic Proton, Resene Friar Greystone, Resene Metallic Blast Yellow, Resene Cape Palliser
- Resene testpot brush, artists paintbrushes
- Fast-adhesive glue
Step 1: Using fast-hold adhesive, glue animal ‘feet’ to the wooden doorstop. Allow to dry.
Step 2: Paint the animal and wooden door stop with the non-metallic Resene paint and allow to dry.
Step 3: Paint the animal with the Resene metallic paint (we chose to leave the wooden base non-metallic)
Top tip: Resene FX Metallic paint is Eco Choice-approved and gives a stunning shimmer effect to your project. Check out the Resene Metallics and special effects colour chart at your local Resene ColorShop.
