Three’s The Block NZ outdoor areas are a breath of fresh air

The final week on Three’s The Block NZ saw the teams put the finishing touches on their outdoor spaces. Their garden creations popped against their elegant houses in Resene Element, Resene Half Athens Grey and Resene Zircon and left the judges wowed.

It was the week to win, with a $5000 prize for the best outdoor area and an additional $5000 for the team who the judges’ deemed had the best house up for grabs. A further $2000 prize was on the cards this week, with the teams judging each other’s courtyards and balconies. Tim & Arthur took out the $2000 prize and the COLORSTEEL® spot a colour paintball challenge, winning themselves $5000 cash.

The final Block challenge, nosy neighbours, pitted the teams against one another with a quiz on how much they knew about their neighbours. Dylan & Keegan won the challenge, earning themselves $5000 cash and the right to select the auction order for every team.

With the first 10/10 score this season from judge Lauren, Tim & Arthur won this week’s room reveal and also scored themselves the $5000 prize for creating the home the judges deemed to be the best. “House four connects all the dots in every aspect,” says judge Chris.

We take a closer look at the four outdoor areas this week:

Tim & Arthur’s Outdoor Area

Final Score: 28.5/30

Tim & Arthur brought their backyard space to a whole new level with a sophisticated firepit and seating that complemented their dark exterior in Resene CoolColour Element.

Resene CoolColour Element added a touch of sophistication to Tim & Arthur’s exterior. They created a functional front outdoor area of their home, but took things to a whole new level in the back, where they incorporated extensive seating and a firepit that flowed out from the living area.

The judges thought the planting and lighting was a fantastic addition to their front yard. They were all impressed by the attention to detail in the backyard, including the vege patch, barbeque and firepit. Overall, the judges loved the connection to the interior living spaces and said that it really spoke to the intentions of the home. “This is really smart design,” says Chris. “I think the lush tropical planting they have that sort of pares back is very intentional.”

Functional and fabulous, Tim & Arthur’s front outdoor area complements their home’s exterior in Resene CoolColour Element.

Connie & Rach’s Outdoor Area

Final Score: 19.5/30

Connie & Rach’s outdoor area was given a refresh with a bright fence and exterior weatherboards in Resene Zircon.

Connie & Rach’s outdoor areas won over the judges this week with their beautiful design. Their retaining walls were constructed using the Resene Masonry Render System – fiberglass reinforced MonoRender with a Resene Zircon Rockcote Flexitex plaster finish – and created a sophisticated front lawn, alongside their artistic panels in Resene Zircon.

The judges were impressed with the team’s functional, playful space. They thought the backyard space had a very relaxed feel and that it connected well with their kitchen. “Good little washing area with real grass,” says Chris. “It’s a real little surprise garden.” Ann Louise agreed, saying the screen between the washing area and lawn was an effective and gorgeous addition.

The retaining wall outside Connie & Rach’s home was created with the Rockcote Masonry Render System and finished in Resene Zircon, which perfectly complements their home’s Resene Zircon exterior.

Meg & Dan’s Outdoor Area

Final Score: 24.5/30

Meg & Dan’s beautiful home in Resene Half Athens Grey was given the final touches with a retaining wall that uses the Rockcote Masonry Render System finished with Resene Limelock and X200 with a natural grey plaster finish.

Meg & Dan created some charming outdoor areas this week, with retaining walls that use the Rockcote Masonry Render System finished with Resene Limelock and X200 with a grey plaster finish, bringing the front of the house to life. Their wrap around deck flowed seamlessly into their small garden courtyard that provided a lovely, secluded nook at the back of the house.

The judges thought the areas were fabulous and it was clear that the team was catering to their intended target market. “Aren’t they clever, this is just fab,” says Ann-Louise. “It’s what you want to see. They’ve maximised the space very well and have got their vision across.” Lauren loved the street appeal and Chris felt the use of the glazing really finished off the look and created a nice, natural barrier.

The grassy area at the back of the house provides a secluded nook. The home was painted in Resene Half Athens Grey.

Dylan & Keegan’s Outdoor Area

Final Score: 27/30

Dylan & Keegan’s bright yellow door in Resene Wild Thing pops against the team’s dark exterior in Resene CoolColour Element.

Dylan & Keegan created some simple yet stylish spaces for their outdoor areas this week. Their bright yellow Resene Wild Thing front door created a fabulous contrast against their exterior in Resene CoolColour Element. An outdoor area off the lounge provides a secluded seating area and increases the indoor/outdoor flow of the home.

The judges thought they had achieved a simple and effective outdoor space. They thought the team created a sophisticated yet effortless backyard that was in keeping with their house. “This is great, I like the plants,” says Lauren. “The big deep steps look fantastic.” Ann-Louise thought the front entrance had a very elegant vibe and Chris thought the secret hideaway garden in the back was nicely finished.
