Three’s The Block NZ: Kitchen & Dining room week

Kitchen & Dining room week on The Block NZ is always sure to bring some drama, but despite a power cut, a leak, multiple delays and an artwork fiasco the teams all managed to finish off the heart of the home, complete with finishing touches of Resene Half Sea Fog and Resene Double Merino.

The week started with Quinn & Ben and Maree & James both using their 3-day head start, which got them well established in the design of their large spaces. Later, Quinn took out the Game Changer challenge with a wasabi win – giving them the power to take a point off another team. This proved to be the real game changer as Quinn & Ben had their first ever win in The Block NZ history – a true redemption!

We take a closer look at the four spaces created this week:

Quinn & Ben’s Kitchen & Dining Area

Final score: 15/20

Quinn & Ben used sophisticated Resene Quarter Foggy Grey from the Karen Walker Paints collection on their walls.

Quinn & Ben featured Resene Black White on the ceiling and trims to complement the neutral tones used in the rest of the room.

Quinn & Ben were very excited to finally take out a room reveal win with their kitchen and dining space. The couple went for a light but sophisticated look with walls in Resene Quarter Foggy Grey and trims and ceiling in Resene Black White. Shelley commented that the placement for functionality in the kitchen was a bit off, but the judges loved the polished concrete floors and commented on the lightness of the space.

Maree & James’ Kitchen & Dining Area

Final score: 15/20 minus 1

Maree & James’ classic kitchen and dining space is painted in Resene Half Bianca on the walls and ceiling.

Maree & James’ cosy sitting nook was brought together with the warm Resene Half Bianca.

Maree & James came close to a joint win for their room, only missing out due to Quinn & Ben’s game changer taking a point off their final score. The couple went for classic off-white Resene Half Bianca for the whole space. Judge Shelley immediately commented “this is what we want to see” upon walking into the kitchen area and gave them big ticks for practicality and storage. Their choice of panel placement was a success, and the judges loved the use of colour with the cabinetry and thought the sitting nook by the front door was a great use of space. Overall, the room’s design impressed the judges.

Stacy & Adam’s Kitchen & Dining Area

Final score: 13.5/20

Stacy & Adam used Resene Quarter Bianca for the walls in their clean and modern kitchen space.

Stacy & Adam pulled the Scandi modern look together with trims and ceiling painted in Resene Double Merino.

Despite an eventful week and being the last to get their kitchen installed, Stacy & Adam’s “séance to Jason” paid off. Their dining area featured warm white,  Resene Double Merino on the walls and Resene Quarter Bianca for the trims and ceiling. The judges’ first impressions were that the space was beautiful, calm and inviting. The main criticism was that the kitchen area lacked definition and felt more like a hallway. Yet again it was said they were playing it safe to which Stacy commented “we’re playing to the market!” Overall, the judges liked the unique space but thought they could have done more with texture and colour.

Chloe & Ben’s Kitchen & Dining Area

Final score: 6/20

Chloe & Ben’s kitchen space featured Resene Half Sea Fog for a chic off-white finish.

Chloe & Ben used Resene Half Sea Fog to complement the earthy warm tones of their dining space.

Chloe & Ben had high hopes for this week, however instead they had some very tough feedback from the judges. The pair used Resene Half Sea Fog to go for a warm vibe for their kitchen and dining area but were criticised on the darkness of the space. The judges commented that the kitchen feels too spacious and echoey with the absence of an island. However, they liked the colour of the cabinetry and thought the dining area was beautifully styled.

Top tip: Kitchens are high wear and tear zones so are best finished in Resene Kitchen & Bathroom Paint, made with anti-bacterial silver and MoulDefender, for extra protection and a durable finish.  You can extend this same paint into your dining area where you have an open plan space for a seamless finish.  Keep concrete flooring looking good with Resene Concrete Wax, an easy to apply clear finish that will help to protect the concrete from busy family life.
