Three’s The Block NZ: It’s Family Bathroom week

Another action-packed week on Three’s The Block NZ saw the teams create four stunning family bathrooms. The soft and neutral Resene Half Bianca, Resene Half Sea Fog and Resene Eighth Pravda all made features. It’s the tightest race yet for the $10,000 prize this week.

It was a rocky week full of challenges for all the couples: Chloe & Ben faced trouble as they raced to plaster and sand their room before their painter arrived. Quinn & Ben struggled with their tile choices, while Pete reminded them of the safety regulations as he sees their workers are not in full safety gear. He ends up giving them a time penalty of 30 minutes, which means that they have to stop 30 minutes before the other teams – all due to not adhering to the safety requirements. Adam rolled his ankle, while Maree & James also received a 10 minute time penalty.

Despite a roller coaster of setbacks, the judges are blown away by the standard of the four bathrooms produced. Chloe & Ben take out yet another win though, scoring an impressive 20/20.

We take a closer look at the four family bathrooms this week:

Chloe & Ben’s Family Bathroom

Final score: 20/20

Resene Eighth Pravda on the ceiling and Resene Half Sea Fog on the walls set the backdrop for a sophisticated and soothing bathroom.

Chloe & Ben certainly recovered from forgetting to put a heater on to dry their paint earlier in the week. The judges are left speechless when they enter the family bathroom, saying it feels like a high-end hotel. Resene Eighth Pravda on the ceiling and Resene Half Sea Fog on the walls complement the softness of their grey tiling and gold finishes. They really have mastered neutrals, comments judge Jason.

Maree & James’ Family Bathroom

Final score: 18.5

Resene Half Bianca on the walls and ceiling complements Maree & James’ use of green tiling beautifully in their family bathroom.

Maree & James’ bathroom thoroughly impressed the judges, with an earthy but luxe feel. They went for forest green tiles, which shine against Resene Half Bianca, a fleecy off-white. The judges say the room feels nicely finished and is hard to fault.

Stacy & Adam’s Family Bathroom

Final score: 18/20

The crisp and brightResene Quarter Bianca on the walls and ceiling sets Stacy & Adam’s chosen artwork off perfectly.

The judges love Stacy & Adam’s bathroom, commenting they like the wet room approach, and their play with fluted detailing. The linear nature of these details gives the room good height. Jason comments that he is not usually a fan of white walls, but it’s worked well with use of art. Resene Quarter Bianca is crisp and fresh and offers the perfect backdrop.

Quinn & Ben’s Family Bathroom

Final score: 16.5/20

Classic Resene Black White stuns in Quinn & Ben’s family bathroom on the walls and ceiling.

Quinn & Ben opt for a clean and classic bathroom, with Resene Black White on the walls and ceiling. It’s striking against their green floor tiling. Judges comment they like the skylights and curved wall, and it feels like the room has a Japanese influence, zen and fresh.

Top paint tip: Bathrooms are high wear and tear spaces, much more prone to moisture and mould than other spaces. Use Resene Kitchen & Bathroom paints with anti-bacterial silver and MoulDefender for extra protection.  The Resene Kitchen & Bathroom range comes in low sheen, flat and semi-gloss – Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen Kitchen & Bathroom for walls, Resene SpaceCote Flat Kitchen & Bathroom for ceilings and Resene Lustacryl Kitchen & Bathroom for trim. You can also repaint over old tiled floors with Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer and Resene Walk-on or old cabinetry with Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer and Resene Lustacryl.

Top colour tip: There are no real rules when it comes to colour use in bathrooms, though greens and blues have traditionally been popular. Being cool colours, they can also make a small bathroom appear more spacious. Avoid using too many colours if your bathroom feels small. Instead, paint a dado on the bottom third of each wall in your chosen colour and paint the remaining two-thirds in white. Make sure your bathroom is adequately ventilated before you start redecorating; otherwise you may find your new bathroom finish doesn't last long in a wet and steamy environment.
