Let’s take a look at the themes:

Art Nouveau

The Art Nouveau home design style (featured above) displays decorative detailing combined with contemporary characteristics. This aesthetic is defined by flowing lines, curves that are seen from the walls with Resene Wallpaper Collection 103790414, to the furniture pieces on offer from some of Parnell’s most prestigious décor stores.

Pieces such as the Rumba Chair from Source Mondial, the Mateo table from Dawson & Co, the Soda Table from Matisse, or the striking anna d chair from forma will fit into any special corner of your home. Create the desired warmth with colour pallets of mustards, vibrant oranges, blush pink Resene Wallpaper Collection 103774229 and rose white with Resene Cest La Vie.

Finally you can complete the look with a Pols Potten Apple Tree candleholder from Corso Interiors, a Rimu relief sculpture by Jamie Adamson available from Black Door Gallery, or a work by Aroha Gossage from ARTIS Gallery, which beautifully echoes the earthy tones.

Art Deco

Art Deco is all about the rich use of colours, bold geometric patterns and decadent detail work—this is reflected with the Resene Wallpaper Collection 37528-1 Pairing the deep colour of Resene Half Ironsand with Resene Rice Cake creates drama, highlighting the details in the furniture pieces and homeware accessories alike - such as the debonair Ralph Lauren Garret Decanter and Tumblers from Trenzseater, the Dew Drops Pendant available from Light Plan constructed from mouth-blown crystal and vegan leather, or the elegant solid mahogany Knightsbridge Desk from Elle Maison.

Black patinated Steel tables from Bauhaus, a Teak Roller Max sideboard from Cuchi, or an Athens Runner from Source Mondial consolidate the dramatic tones. Enhancing the look, this style brings in both glamour and luxury with symmetrical designs and exuberant shapes such as the Zori side table from Corso Interiors.

Bring together the bold geometry with a screenprint (‘Queen 1.19 G’) by Brad Novak aka New Blood Pop, available from Parnell Gallery. Finally, accessorise with the striking Inu Vase from Alfresco Inexterior Living.

Eclecticism

Eclecticism home design embraces numerous styles such as modern, vintage and bohemian. A variety of materials and textures are mixed and matched to really personalise a space. Simplifying the colour palette with Resene Athens Grey and Resene Alabaster allows the furniture pieces to come to life and really allow them to be the star of the show!

Look no further than the Bell Coffee Table from Matisse or the Panton Chair, created out of durable, dyed-through plastic with a lustrous matt finish. The Oto outdoor table lamp from Jardin clearly makes a statement in all the right ways, or look for cosy comfort with the candi sofa from forma or the ‘Gris’ statement rug from the Source Mondial Modern Art Series. Complete the look with the coastal colours of Resene Wallpaper Collection A60003.

To echo the blue hues and coastal vibe, you could choose an acrylic circular wall hanging painting (‘Macrocarpa on the Beach No II’) by Michael Moore or invest in a Ben Young sculpture (‘Split Sea’ Laminated float glass, cast concrete, stainless steel), both from Black Door Gallery.

Farmhouse

Farmhouse is a combination of whites and pastels used on everything from furniture to linens, and the ambiance is warmed up using weathered woods and rustic finishes like oil-rubbed bronze and copper. A classic and timeless theme, which Parnell décor retailers speak to better than the rest. The Newport loose covered sofa available from Corso Interiors is a perfect example of this.

Accessories in this theme such as the Strand Pendant Lamp from Bauhaus are statement, yet simple. The generously sized boheme vase from forma is uniquely 3D printed with hand finishing, a ceramic vase to add magic to any home. The Duke bar cart from Trenzseater adds a touch of depth and darkness to this theme, or for lighter earthy tones look to the elegant lines of the Bok Dining Table from Cuchi or Elle Maison Director’s Chair, hand crafted from natural rattan. Bringing in the textural element of Resene Wallpaper Collection FJ41108 offsets the off-white surroundings of Resene White Thunder and harmonises beautifully with the slightly deeper contrast of Resene Innocence.

Complete the feeling of serenity with an Archival Pigment Print by Jane Crisp, (Harmony), from Parnell Gallery and a Cosy Throw in Mastice from Alfresco Intexterior Living.

Japanese

Japanese interiors give off a serene, peaceful feel thanks to a simple design style. Uncluttered spaces, clean lines and balance are key elements to pulling of this design style.

Speaking to clean lines, it’s the Iselt 3 seater sofa from Dawson & Co that is as lush as it is simply serene, or for a richer green choose the classic Chamonix Armchair from Trenzseater. Let’s not forget that great home design requires flow from interior to exterior, which is why the Jardin Caractere Outdoor Table (combined with Fermob bench and chairs), together with stylish Fermob basket planters, slot perfectly into this theme due to both their colour and character! Colours are reflected back to the natural environment and the furniture and accessories are there to enhance. The Jeena sospensione Tim Pendant lights, both from Light Plan, are examples of this.

Bring in a barely-there green such as Resene Saltpan or the mushroom beige of Resene Triple Blanc to offset the furniture pieces. Resene Wallpaper Collection 291406 is the final connecting piece for this design.

A screenprint on Hoop Pine Plywood by Shane Hansen (‘Tuatara Aotearoa’), available from Parnell Gallery, celebrates the natural environment in New Zealand and consolidates the colour palette.
