Project Spotlight: Walker Architecture's Red Box

13 Dec 2022

Resene Bright Red isn’t quite what you would expect to see amidst the green hills of Wellington, but this was exactly the vision for the clients of Walker Architecture & Design. Approaching the firm with the need for an extension of their 1987 Roger Walker house in Wadestown, the design had to complement the original home which is assembled of different forms and shapes over three levels. As such, iconic NZ architect Roger Walker designed a small square box with a pyramid roof to house the extra space the clients needed.

Then came the colour. Resene Bright Red was chosen by the adventurous clients, who were drawn to the heritage resonances of the shade and how it complemented the existing grey and white colour scheme of the home. Architect Chloe Coles said that they had suggested warm, bright colours, and were very pleased when the clients picked the loudest and proudest. “An email from the client after the first coat went on mentioned ‘slight panic attacks’ (we’re still not sure if that was a joke) which was a nerve-wracking moment, but they grew to love the shade very soon after the final coat,” she says. The final product is a graphic and striking addition to the streetscape that stands proud amongst the natural environment.

The striking box painted in Environmental Choice approved Resene Sonyx 101 waterborne paint tinted to Resene Bright Red stands out from the Wellington hills with its semi-gloss finish, paired with Resene Half Sea Fog on the window sash and neutral Resene Half Silver Chalice on the exterior of the existing home.
