Since the early days, Resene has championed environmental responsibility and sustainability, developing a number of industry firsts, including the development of a range of world-leading waterborne enamels. Not surprisingly, many of its own people – such as Architectural and Specifier Services Representative, Brooke Calvert – are proponents of the Resene range of Eco Choice Aotearoa-certified products.

“I love getting to work closely with architects and interior designers, assisting with bespoke colour selections and product guidance across a range of diverse projects spanning residential, retail, commercial, hospitality, education and infrastructure across the Canterbury region,” says Brooke.

“On all of those projects, I take real pride in advocating for Resene’s comprehensive range of environmentally friendly paints and systems.”

Brooke says her goal is to add value to her clients’ projects through practical support and a broad technical coatings knowledge.

“Paint effects, such as a soft colourwash using Resene FX Paint Effects Medium, are proving popular at the moment, and I enjoy introducing clients to innovative products that allow them to create something custom that complements their project. Recent projects incorporating this look include the Coffee Embassy fit out by SemiCreative and Akin Café by Johnstone Callaghan Architects.

“I’m also really lucky to be supported by my colleague, Jackie Nicolls, who creates custom samples for clients to review before a project begins; a really helpful step in making sure everyone is happy with the design direction, and also another example of how the wider Resene team utilises its collective knowledge for the benefit of our clients.”

Another aspect of her job that Brooke enjoys is getting the opportunity to join a project at the ‘ground floor’, working with clients to realise the design objective.

“There’s something really satisfying about clicking with a designer and working on a specific paint specification for their project and creating samples that reflect their vision. Whether it’s clear timber finishes or paint effects, that’s the fun part – it challenges your thinking and pushes you to find the right solution.

“I love that kind of challenge; it keeps things interesting. Plus, it’s always exciting seeing a project go from early drawings to real life, especially knowing how much work goes into it from everyone involved.”

When it comes to timber finishes, Brooke says the Resene Woodsman Natural Wood Oil range, available in more than 20 colours, is a particular standout product.

“It provides a stunning natural finish that allows the grain of the timber to shine through while still adding a layer of protection. One of the great features is that it can be used on both interior and exterior walls, ceilings and soffits, so there’s no need to purchase separate products. Best of all, it’s made using plant-based technology, so it’s also a more environmentally friendly option.”

Given her work specifying colour options for a range of projects, does Brooke have a favourite colour of her own?

“Working on the variety of projects that I do, I’m exposed to so many options, however, I find myself consistently gravitating towards softer, calming tones. At the moment, I’m loving earthy greens and soft pinks, such as Field Day and Contented, both from The Range Fashion Colours 24 fandeck.
