Creating a playful and inviting space for Tiny Giants Paediatric Clinic

Designing a paediatric clinic involves more than just functionality – it's about creating an environment that makes children feel comfortable, reassured and excited to visit. This was the approach that Interior Designer Jamie Durrant took when she was tasked with transforming Tiny Giants' new clinic.
The projectuses a mix of joyful Resene colours and skilful design to create an atmosphere that was both playful and calming for young patients and their families.
Tiny Giants’ branding provided the foundation for the clinic’s colour scheme. Jamie drew inspiration from the clinic’s brand colours, using them to guide her choices of fabrics for the furniture and colour for the walls. The brand’s palette, which includes Resene Energise, Resene Java, Resene Spray and Resene Vortex, also became the vibrant hues in the form of a mural that would dominate the waiting area. This design, by artist Emmy Star Brown, also helped to set the tone for the entire space.

"The waiting room serves as the central hub, establishing the overall palette and ambiance for the entire space,” says Jamie. "By choosing lighter tones that complemented the hues present in the waiting room, I aimed to create a cohesive and harmonious flow throughout the clinic.”
Resene Wax Flower, Resene Half Kumutoto, Resene Lola and Resene French Pass were selected for the clinic rooms, each chosen to complement the waiting room’s colours. Keeping the main walls in Resene Wan White ensured the mural remained the star of the space, allowing each clinic room to be a calm, welcoming environment that still carried the vibrancy of the overall design.
The apricot rose hue of Resene Wax Flower makes this clinic room warm and welcoming. Darker orange accents are introduced for a cohesive design.
The soft lilac hue of Resene Lola brings whimsy to clinic room 3 and pairs beautifully with the bright purple chairs.
Jamie wanted to create a space that felt lively and fun, while also making sure it was calming and soothing for children of all ages. "The custom mural was the last thing we received after all the painting was completed and custom furniture was finished," she says. "Once the mural was installed, it was such a thrill to see all the colours in the mural, the fabrics and clinic rooms cohesively come together."
By incorporating the clinic’s branded colours, Jamie carefully curated each clinic room to offer a welcoming space for both children and teens. The vibrant palette softened the intensity of the brand’s primary colours, providing a more relaxed atmosphere for consultations. This thoughtful approach not only met the aesthetic goals of the project but also reinforced the clinic's identity and mission.
Clinic room 4 is painted in Resene French Pass, an early morning sky blue that brings a sense of relaxation and calm.
Amongst all the bursts of joyful colours, Resene Wan White offers a bright and clean space within the clinic.
What stands out about the Tiny Giants Paediatric Clinic is the attention to detail and the seamless integration of the clinic’s brand into every aspect of the design. The chosen colours, from the bright mural to the more subtle hues on the walls, create a sense of continuity that guides visitors through the space. The use of these colours has a psychological effect, too – by surrounding patients with hues they associate with the brand, the design fosters a feeling of trust and familiarity, essential elements in any healthcare setting.
"I crafted a vibrant and playful environment tailored to children of all ages," says Jamie. "This strategic use of colours isn’t just about aesthetics, it's integral to reinforcing the confidence and resilience associated with their clinic's brand identity.
"This project was an absolute joy to be involved with. Gaining my client’s trust from the start enabled me to expand my design skills and produce a truly special clinic for them."
The project holds personal significance for Jamie, as it was not only her first major commercial project but also Tiny Giants’ first independent clinic. This partnership resulted in a space that is both functional and full of character – a place where children can feel at ease, knowing they are in good hands.
With its vibrant mural, carefully chosen colours, and cohesive design, the Tiny Giants Paediatric Clinic is a testament to the power of thoughtful design in creating an environment where both patients and staff can thrive.
