Rural bliss: Canterbury family’s take on French country classic

Shane and Ashley’s Leeston home is a picture of calm – however if the dreamy Resene Quarter Thorndon Cream and Resene Clouded Blue walls could talk, they would tell you about the hours of hard work and 3am finishes that went into their home’s construction

The couple decided to build their dream home from scratch. After weeks of hard grind, working late nights, days and weekends, they finally moved into their home two years later and began to enjoy their efforts.

“The full scale of the project was the challenge, and we did 90% of it outside of business hours,” says Ashley.

“We still had to keep our business going as well as parent a young family and build the house. Some nights Shane would finish at 2.30am or 3am in the morning and then be back at work before 8am that same day.

“But we love the whole place! Because we designed it, built it and furnished it, it’s done how we wanted it.”

Luckily Shane and Ashley are a building dream team. Shane is a self-employed builder, owning Taylormade Builders, who took care of the construction and Ashley, mum and secondary school teacher, put her multitasking skills to work caring for their young son while also helping with the painting.

The exterior of the house is a sight to be admired. Shane handmade all of the old-school wooden sills, cut out the fretwork and even designed a bespoke profile for their architraves.

The Taylor’s efforts, along with help from interior designer Alex Marie at Kit and Caboodle, allowed them to create their dream home. Now that the hard work is behind them, Shane and Ashley can stand back and marvel at their charming country abode.

“We have both always liked the old school classic look of the villa/bungalow style and feel this style suits the landscape, being in a rural setting” says Ashley, who describes their home interior style as “our take on French country”.

With sons Flynn and Blake, dogs Barrett and Trigger, and Dusty the cat, the Taylors have already sown deep roots on their spacious, sunny property.  The new build replica heritage home is very open and situated to catch the best sun at all times of the day and lock in that warmth with double glazing and well-chosen insulation. The exterior design, and colour in quadruple strength Resene Ash, is not the only thing they considered carefully, the Taylors chosen interior colours have been well thought out for each room and space in the house.

“Shane and I always wanted every room to be a different colour and theme” Ashley says, “We like lots of different colours - dark, light and each colour gives a different feel to each space.” The couple thought very wisely about how their 14 selected Resene colours would flow throughout the house.

Resene Mineshaft is an elegant grey blue well suited to dining room where it not only complements the light timber flooring and table and trims in Resene Quarter Thorndon Cream, but the dark colour frames the country views.

Ashley and Shane found it hard to agree on a favourite room in their new home but they love the kitchen, entryway, master bedroom and ensuite. Ashley chose a gentle, calm blue for the master bedroom, Resene Clouded Blue from the Karen Walker Paints collection from Resene, it has quickly become one of her favourite colours in her home and throughout her journey. Ashley says “This colour is very pretty, l love the depth it provides and it complements our Resene Quarter Thorndon Cream barn doors and the fabrics we have chosen”.

Custom-made barn doors were made to Shane and Ashley’s own design, providing an exceptional touch to the living room and master bedroom. Despite ever-changing interior design styles, barn doors endure as a top trending interior design addition.

Sliding barn doors can be a versatile feature that can save space and can be easily created by DIYers using timber or battens. Use Resene Enamacryl tinted to your favourite Resene colour on the doors, paired with a contrasting colour on the joinery.

The Taylors agree that the full scale of their project was a challenge, especially committing to working on it outside of business hours most of the time, as well as parenting a young family. There were a lot of long days and nights put into their beloved home.

Ashley’s advice for anyone doing renovations is that hard work will bring rewards.

“Rome wasn’t built in a day. Patience, persistence and hard work will pay off,” says Ashley “We never gave up on our style or the level of detail or finish, even though at times we were exhausted from the project. We love the whole place!”
