Colour of 2017 – it's green

15 Dec 2016

What colour will we paint our walls in the coming year? Well, according to the Pantone Color Institute, the answer is green. A colour called Greenery is Pantone's colour of the year, a hue that symbolises “a reconnection to nature, one another and a larger purpose,” say the company. Described as nature’s neutral, the color is a fresh and zesty-yellow green.

While Pantone colours are used in graphics and printing, that's not much help to home decorators. Happily, the Resene colour collections have some great colours to use if you are inspired by Greenery. There's Resene Limerick, an Irish green that has been hugely popular with Resene customers for years now. If you want something a little deeper, try Resene Limeade, a tangy lollipop green, or for something a bit softer, how about Resene Chelsea Cucumber, a pistachio fresh mint green?

These sort of fresh greens provide us with the hope we collectively yearn for amid a complex social and political landscape, says Pantone. They satisfy our growing desire to rejuvenate, revitalize and unite, symbolising the reconnection we seek with nature, one another and a larger purpose.

A wall painted in this hue provides a pop of colour, with the added benefit of creating the illusion of nature indoors. Or choose a botanically-themed wallpaper, house plants, terrariums, a living green wall, or accessories and fabrics. Bringing the outside in, these greens can improve self-esteem, reduce anxiety and heighten awareness of your surroundings. You can enjoy being surrounded in a nature-inspired colour every day no matter what Mother Nature is doing outside.
