Sculpture at play

30 Mar 2016

The Brick Bay Folly is a competition that asks young emerging architects to enter a design that pushes the boundary between sculpture and architecture. Entrants are also asked to stick to the style of a Folly, an architectural object that lacks a deliberate functional purpose.

This month, the Folly 2016 was unveiled, a piece of artwork inspired by ancient M?ori mythology, created by the winners Ryan Mahon, Sacha Milojevic, Edward Roberts and Raphaela Rose.

Daughter of The Swamp references the historic hinaki or eel trap and the legend of Maui who was first to catch the long eel, with his wife Hina, the Daughter of The Swamp.

Finished in Resene Armourcote 821 and Resene Enamacryl gloss waterborne enamel tinted to Resene Pohutukawa, Resene Hacienda and Resene Solitaire, it forms part of Brick Bay's sculpture trail, an extensive outdoor gallery among native trees and stunning scenery.

You're invited to walk underneath the net, while taking in the surrounding landscapes through the gaps of the brightly coloured, interlaced steel. For more information, see www.brickbaysculpture.co.nz.

This is the second year of the competition, which is assisted by principal sponsors Resene, Fletchers, and Unitec, and media partners Architecture New Zealand and ArchitectureNow.
