Inspiration to holiday at home

The Lindis Lodge in the Ahuriri Valley In the South Island blends into its environment.

With international borders closed, travel lovers can find holiday experiences closer to home through the TV show Hotels By Design.

The eight-episode series highlights spectacular design-driven hotels in Australia and New Zealand: from white sand beach resorts in tropical Queensland to a boutique lodge in the alpine wilderness of Lindis Pass in the South Island. At the end of the series, design industry leaders, including Resene’s Rebecca Long, crown a winner based on several criteria including design and sustainability.

“I was incredibly impressed by the wide range of hotels on Hotels By Design. Design boundaries were pushed and colour was used to elevate the beautiful, unique architectural designs. It was very difficult to select one winner," says Rebecca.

The first episode features the Lindis Lodge, a luxury boutique hotel in the Ahuriri Valle which has won many awards for its curved roof architecture and use of timber.

“The Lindis is such a powerful piece of architecture it is an incredible statement which blends into its raw natural environment,” says Rebecca.

The lodge, designed by Architecture Workshop, was recently recognised in 2020 at the World Architecture Festival (WAF) in Amsterdam in the Netherlands where it won Hotel and Leisure- Completed Buildings category.

Hotels By Design executive producer Mike Chapman is excited the show is back on air, “We are very pleased to have negotiated with Discovery Channel’s owned TV Three to bring this beautiful looking and inspiring series back to a free to air, Kiwi national audience”.

The Master Suite at the Lindis Hotel features wood panelling. The hotel is noted for its use of sustainably sourced timber and was awarded Highly-Commended at the NZ Wood-Resene Timber Design Awards 2020.
