Marcus and Melanie have always been attracted to dramatic colour with wood tones – in the living room they paired Resene New Denim Blue with a feature wooden wall (made from fence palings). The other walls are painted in Resene Eighth Friar Grey.

At just 23-years-old, Marcus and Melanie decided to buy and do up their first house... and what a house it is.
Drawn to dramatic dark colours (cue Resene New Denim Blue on the walls), wood and copper tones and a 'traditional eclectic' style, it's certainly a dream home.
The couple has always loved dramatic dark walls and picked out Resene New Denim Blue for its dark charcoal look. Friends and family were a little skeptical, but, after seeing the outcome, they agree it hits just the right balance of bold and beautiful.
They finished the remaining walls in the living area, study and one of the bedrooms in Resene Eighth Friar Grey, a gentle grey beige. This popular Resene neutral works well in areas with less natural light, and makes the dark blue pop against its softer hue.
The jewel in the crown is the master bedroom, painted in Resene New Denim Blue. Here, sunlight pours through the three large windows most of the day, and the chandelier and metallic accessories simply glow against the dark blue walls.
Melanie talks to us about her beautiful home.
What part of the house are you happiest with?
We love the kitchen, dining room, living area... oooh, all of it! We always dreamed of the indoor-outdoor flow of the whole area and think we made the best use of the space.
What is your advice for someone trying to achieve a similar look?
When it comes to decor, you can get some amazing things on Trade Me. As for colours, use Pinterest and pin everything you like when planning your space. You’ll be surprised to find the things that recur in the images you pin. You might be originally thinking of one colour but then find that you keep finding images of spaces that use another colour.
And don’t be scared to do something bold.
What was the biggest challenge for this project?
The floor… we originally had bright blue carpet and typical early 2000s terracotta looking kitchen tiles. Poor Marcus spent days removing the tiles, creating the biggest concrete dust storm that lasted weeks. It was all worth it once Flooring Xtra Henderson installed the LVT wood look floor, in only two days. That just made the space.
Do you have a favourite colour?
We used Resene Nebula in the ensuite and second bedroom. It's just the perfect light blue-green.
How did you find working with Resene paint and colours?
The paint goes on the wall so smoothly. The colour range is amazing, and we're always going to a Resene ColorShop and using habitat for inspiration.

The guest bedroom gets less natural light, and so has a brighter colour scheme of Resene Nebula and Resene Eighth Friar Grey.
