Kids get creative

You might not feel that comfortable painting a cloud mural on your living room wall but the one place we feel quite free to let our fancies fly is our kids’ rooms. A child’s room, whatever age and stage they are at, is the one place you can go all out with your decorative techniques. The one place you can choose a bold and bright Resene colour, or a combination of colours, artfully applied. It’s also where you can let little Johnny or Jemma loose with a paint brush and know that whatever they produce will make them proud… and that you can keep the door closed if you think it will shock or scare your visitors.

A few very creative kids rooms have crossed our desk here at Habitat by Resene lately, mostly compliments of the Your Home & Garden Resene Home Colour competition. It’s been a popular part of that magazine for years now, and often attracts a good proportion of beautifully decorated children’s rooms. Many of those rooms have been conceived and decorated by the kids themselves. Our up-and-coming generation of creative minds!

Here are some tips if you’re decorating a kid’s room:
If you’re not confident of your decorating talents, start small, maybe with a feature wall in a bold colour or try decorating a piece of furniture.
Make good use of the various kid’s colours and wallpapers available at Resene, such as the Resene KidzColour range [link] or the latest Boys & Girls wallpaper collection [link].
Colour-blocking is another easy-to-achieve technique, whether you use simple geometric shapes, or something more elaborate. Stick to three main colours, plus whatever is on the wall as a background. Stripes are another easy but effective paint technique – try wide horizontal stripes as a change from narrow vertical ones or use just a few stripes rather than doing a full wall.
Pick a theme and draw inspiration from that. It might be a current movie theme, or something more generic like fairies, the jungle, vintage cars etc.
Don’t get locked into gender stereotypes. It’s no longer all about blue for boys and pink for girls. There are many great gender-neutral colours to choose from.

Dubbed the ‘owl room’ this bedroom was planned as a unisex space for Shaun Cole’s grandchildren. Using the bed covers as inspiration, she found that Resene Pohutukawa was a perfect match, and has been partnered with Resene Quarter Milk White to make wide wall stripes.

Young Ruth felt like a change, and that meant repainting her bedroom. After deciding on blue she narrowed down her choices and settled on Pelorus. Ruth did the painting herself then with help from mum Marinda, she bought the various accessories including the white chair, jewellery hanger, blue mirror, two yellow cushions, one blue cushion and four white letters that made up my name. And a tip from Ruth? So as not to waste the various Resene testpots she bought she used them to create a gridded noticeboard.

This striking colour-blocked brick-patterned wall was created for young Brody by his mum Kathryn with help from good friend Natasha. Against a main wall colour of Resene Black White, the pattern is created using Resene Wild Thing (yellow), Resene Wham, Resene Yabbadabbadoo (turquoise), Resene Splish Splash (blue), Resene Half Kumutoto (aqua) and Resene Seance (purple).

Five-year-old Liam went for a fairly sophisticated palette for his bedroom that should last him for years to come. The feature wall is inspired by his love of superheroes and was created using Resene Silver Chalice and Resene Fuscous Grey with detailing in Resene Spotlight, Resene Black White and Resene Lochmara. The other walls are in Resene Yabbadabbadoo.

Olivia Andrews took sibling devotion to new heights when she redecorated her sister Grace’s room as a Christmas surprise. With a strong design sense she built furniture, recovered chairs and painted the walls in wide stripes of Resene Hullabaloo (teal), Resene Belladonna (purple) and Resene Blackboard Paint in pink. Olivia hand-painted this wall with her own designs using Resene Hullabaloo. She also made the cool lamp base.

In the current issue of habitat magazine, we asked two designers to give us their suggestions for a child’s bedroom using the new Resene The Range fashion colours 16 colours.

Melanie Arnold from Resene chose bright pinks and icy turquoise using a  coloured ceiling in Resene Such Fun, walls in Resene Cut Glass and Resene Alabaster, a wardrobe in Resene Irresistable over anaglypta wallpaper, trims in Resene Triple Alabaster and a timber floor in Resene Colorwood Whitewash. The scheme is intended for a 13-year-old girl so is modern, with pops of strong colour.

Tina Stephens of Roomie NZ turned the challenge into the perfect room for a five-year-old girl with a wall of pastel pink Resene Cornflower with a contrasting band of white (Resene Alabaster) along the top part of the wall to make the room feel larger. Minty green Resene Chinook updates a second-hand mid-century nightstand, and a whimsical aesthetic is created with the use of mid-century accessories. Resene Chinook is also featured in a house motif mural on the wall. This backdrops a white open-backed bookshelf which, together with a kid-sized beanbag, creates a reading nook.
