Industrial chic meets cosy elegance

Embodying a flawless blend of loft-style industrialism, traditional cosiness and the Danish concept of Hygge, this new build’s design vision was brought to life with the power of Resene paints and wood stains.

This unique home, designed by homeowners Peter and Denise, is not only a testament to thoughtful design but also an embodiment of energy efficiency, high performance and adaptability.

When conceptualising their new home, the duo aimed to seamlessly integrate loft-style industrial elements with the warmth of a traditional bach, all while embracing the concept of Hygge. Facing north, the living room offers a tranquil view of the sheltered decking and garden, while the dining area transitions from an intimate space for two to an open area for entertaining, connected to an additional outdoor space. The entrance features a commissioned sculpture in a recessed rock garden, adding a unique touch.

A vibrant forest green, Resene Dingley, adorns a feature wall in the living room. The timber walls are finished in Resene Qristal Clear Poly-Satin, with slider door surround in Resene Colorwood Natural, ceiling in Resene Foggy Grey and trims in Resene Half Foggy Grey.

A contrasting dark shade, Resene Big Stone, was painted on kitchen cabinetry, with Resene Foggy Grey on the ceiling, Resene Half Foggy Grey on trims and Resene Qristal Clear Poly-Satin on OSB walls.

Structurally, the house uses Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs) with exposed Oriented Strand Board (OSB) panels, celebrating the raw beauty of the material. Engineered Parallel Laminated Timber (PLT) adds warmth and contrast to various elements, while clear finish structural steel complements the timber components.

The design of this home is made even more spectacular due to it being so energy efficient. “The power usage is reduced due to a highly energy efficient deign - high levels of insulation, very airtight and with a Solar PV System,” Peter says. “Over summer we have exported more power than we have used, giving us credit on our power bills to use in winter. The energy cost over a year will average less than $45.00 per month.”

The master bedroom exudes warmth and cosiness. OSB walls are finished in Resene Qristal Clear Poly-Satin with the ceiling in Resene Colorwood Natural.

Natural elements shine through in this home, creating a warm, inviting atmosphere while providing a chic industrial feel. The stairs are stained in Resene Colorwood Natural, with walls in Resene Qristal Clear Poly-Satin and upstairs ceiling in bold Resene Fuscous Grey.

With the help of Peter’s skills as an architectural designer, they deliberately chose to embrace the structural elements of the home, celebrating the exposed OSB panels throughout. Resene Colorwood Raincloud and Resene Qristal Clear Poly-Satin were applied to the walls to enhance the texture and durability of the OSB. The living room's feature wall stands out in Resene Dingley, a natural and quiet forest green, creating a vibrant focal point.

To balance industrialism with cosiness, the main ceiling boasts Resene Fuscous Grey, adding depth to the color scheme. The choice of colours throughout the home complement the OSB elements, creating a cohesive and imaginative palette.

Charcoal grey Resene Fuscous Grey painted on the ceiling adds depth, providing a great contrast with the walls in Resene Qristal Clear Poly-Satin. Trims are painted in Resene Half Foggy Grey.

Choosing a dark shade for the ceiling created a cosy and cocooning feel in this room. Resene Fuscous Grey was the perfect choice for an industrial feel while maintaining a charming and cosy home.

The decision to leave SIP panel OSB boards exposed required meticulous detailing and finishing, challenging for both the design and construction teams. Similarly, exposing the PLT floor on both upper and lower surfaces needed an innovative jointing system. The absence of ceiling voids demanded a bespoke ventilation system, featuring exposed ducting in the living room and duct bulkheads in the bathroom.

The design of this home is a stunning, resilient space that reflects the homeowners' vision of a comfortable retirement haven. The carefully selected materials contribute to the overall aesthetic, making this home a true masterpiece.

Top tip: It’s best to coat the ceiling before the walls and trims. This is because it’s easier to cut into the top of the wall than the edge of the scotia, plus paint drips won’t affect already finished areas. Choose Resene SpaceCote Flat for the most washable paint finish, Resene Earthsense Ceiling Paint for the highest renewable content or Resene Ceiling Paint. All are low odour, smooth finishes with Eco Choice approval.  If you prefer a natural look on timber use Resene Aquaclear Natural – its low sheen will help keep your timber looking authentic while still being well protected.
