Home projects to tackle over winter
When the days get shorter and the weather keeps us indoors, it’s the perfect excuse to finally tackle those home projects you’ve been putting off. Whatever it is – refreshing a room, adding more storage or getting crafty with the kids – winter is all about creating a space that feels warm, calm and ready for hibernation season. Here are some ideas and ways to transform your home with Resene while the rain taps on the windows.
Living room refresh
If you're going to be curled up under a throw all season, it makes sense to love the space you’re in. A quick weekend project like painting a feature wall in a deeper hue, such as Resene Rustic Red or Resene Middle Earth, can instantly make your lounge feel warmer and more inviting. These darker colours are also great for media rooms, creating a cocooning and ‘cinema-like’ atmosphere. Swapping in new cushions, throws and even painting your coffee table or sideboard in classic shades like Resene Merino or Resene Quarter Biscotti is an easy way to bring your winter palette to life.
Here’s two ideas to give you some inspiration:
This moody feature wall in Resene Nocturnal pairs well with the earthy browns for a scrumptious winter palette. The side wall and back wall are painted in Resene Quarter Akaroa, flooring in Resene Akaroa, console table in Resene Spice, ladder in Resene Stack, coffee table in Resene Leather and vases and ornaments in Resene Akaroa, Resene Brown Sugar, Resene Leather, Resene Triple Akaroa and Resene Black. DIY artworks painted in Resene Akaroa and Resene Black. Sofa from Danske Møbler, leaf cushion, linen cushion covers from H&M Home. Project by Vanessa Nouwens, image by Bryce Carleton.
Top tip: Add extra glow by updating old lamp bases in sleek Resene Super Gloss enamel and switching to warm white bulbs.
Bring the summer sky into your home this winter, paired with warm accessories for a striking accent. The walls are painted in Resene Nepal with ‘tile’ paint effect in Resene FX Paint Effects Medium mixed with Resene Frozen. Floor in Resene Blanc, round coffee table in Resene Tuscany and console tabletop in Resene Bokara Grey. Ceramics from Formantics, artwork by Maiko Nagao, candlesticks from Power Surge, dried flowers from Wandering Willow, lamp from Lighting Plus, sofa from Wolf & Co, rug from Good Thing, cushions from Adairs. Clever storage ideas
Winter sometimes equals ‘stuff’. Boots and jackets by the door, blankets in every corner, toys laying around as the kids are more busy inside. This is the time to rethink how your home handles storage. Try repainting old trunks, drawers or crates in cheerful winter hues like the toasty Resene Tacao and Resene Japonica, or bright warm greens like Resene Green Smoke and Resene Wasabi, and using them as multi-purpose pieces.
A bookshelf in the hallway can become a shoe rack, and a bench with baskets below it can hold scarves, gloves and umbrellas. You could even add some colour coat hooks like these ones.
Top tip: Use Resene FX Blackboard Paint on the front of boxes or pantry cupboards to label contents – both practical and cute!
This once hectic entryway is now calm and serene with lots of pockets for storing all the things you don’t want laying around. The walls and shelves are painted in Resene Duck Egg Blue, flooring stain colour washed in Resene Colorwood Breathe Easy, stool in Resene Colorwood Bask, bench seat in Resene Colorwood Rising Tide, books painted in Resene Gold Coast, Resene Concrete, Resene Thor, Resene Conch, Resene Green Meets Blue and Resene Juniper, vases in Resene Thor and Resene Colorwood Rising Tide, bowl in Resene Green Meets Blue and beaded decoration in Resene Colorwood Bask. Shell ball and tealight holder from Indie Home Collective, cushion from Leopard Hall, throw from Adairs, mug from Sunday Homestore. Project by Vanessa Nouwens, image by Bryce Carleton.
Top tip: For a functional and cohesive addition, add painted coat hooks in the colours in the middle for jackets, hats and scarves, and store all of your smaller items like keys, sunnies and shoes inside the cubby holes.
Believe it or not, you can have both kids and a clean house. Turn some old drawers into something your children will love, whether it’s a bit more stylish for a teenager, or something extra fun and bright for young ones. Left: Dresser painted in Resene Alabaster with painted triangles in Resene Bismark, Resene Thumbs Up, Resene Truffle and Resene Permanent Green, wall in Resene Sea Fog with colour block in Resene Fast Forward, floor in Resene Truffle and noticeboard in Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen tinted to Resene Noir over two coats of Resene FX Magnetic Magic. Project by Annick Larkin, image by Melanie Jenkins. Right: These fun lego drawers are painted in Resene Spotlight, Resene Flash Point, Resene Wet N Wild, Resene Japanese Laurel and Resene Black. Project and image by Fleur Thorpe.
Top tip: For projects in kids’ spaces like this, use Resene Lustacryl semi-gloss waterborne enamel for its sturdy and easy-to-wipe properties.
Nursery nook makeover
Cold weather is ideal for creating a calm and cosy nursery. Maybe you’re expecting a new arrival or just updating your toddler’s space – use winter as your slow-and-steady project season. Try soft pastels like Resene Breathless or Resene Ebb, or more gender-neutral tones like Resene Quarter Blanc and Resene Wheatfield. Add hand-painted wall motifs, murals or a cute painted bookshelf to make the space feel extra personal.
Top tip: Consider using Resene Zylone Sheen Zero, a low-odour, no added VOC paint – especially important for little ones' spaces.
In this warm and inviting nursery, the wall is painted in Resene Double Villa White, with stripes and left wall in Resene Putty, floor, coat rack and stool stain colour washed in Resene Colorwood Bask, cot in Resene Putty, rattan cabinet in Resene Double Villa White, basket in Resene Putty, rainbow stack in Resene Teak, Resene Putty, Resene Papier Mache, Resene Half Putty and Resene Double Villa White, crate in Resene Villa White and blocks in Resene Putty, Resene Half Putty, Resene Papier Mache, Resene Colorwood Bask, Resene Colorwood Whitewash and Resene Colorwood English Walnut. Stool from Mocka, palm tree in basket from Adairs, sheet from The Warehouse, crochet overalls from Seed Child. Project by Vanessa Nouwens, image by Bryce Carleton.
If you’re after something with a bit more impact and pattern, consider using a wallpaper. The Resene Little Love Wallpaper Collection is full of designs that will make your heart sing and create a space you will love to spend time in with baby. Resene Wallpaper Collection 38128-1 is sweet and whimsical with subtle blue elephants and trees. It’s a gentle design that still works well as a neutral scheme. Pair it with fresh white trims in Resene Alabaster.
Front door a glow-up
First impressions count, and there’s nothing like a freshly painted front door to lift the whole vibe of your home. It’s a low-effort, high-impact winter project that can be done in a day (weather permitting) and makes a huge difference. Bold hues like Resene Clockwork Orange and Resene Jordy Blue bring personality and charm, while softer shades like Resene Soothe and Resene Duck Egg Blue offer a more subtle welcome.
You could even paint the interior side a different colour to suit your hallway palette – a little design surprise every time you walk in.

· Quick weekend winter projects to try:
· If you have a traditional old fireplace or hearth that is no longer in use, consider giving it a paint to turn it into a feature. The key first step is knowing what material your fireplace is made from so you can choose the right paint and prep products with help from the experts at your local Resene ColorShop.
· Tackle the loo. A stand-alone toilet can be a fun project for a weekend. Try all four walls in an exotic jungle print like Resene Wallpaper Collection 38724-1 with a large mirror framed in Resene Gold metallic paint and a small chandelier for fun touches of glamour.
· Paint Resene FX Chalkboard Paint or Resene FX Blackboard Paint over the inside of a pantry door for a tidy memo board, weekly menu or shopping list solution.
· Create a gallery wall. Spend some time collecting second-hand frames that you think will work well together, then take a weekend to clean and repaint them all in one Resene colour. Add your favourite art pieces – or even images you love from magazines – and create a collage of frames on the wall. Try placing each piece on the floor first so you can arrange things to your liking before you drill holes in the wall!
· Add street appeal. Garage doors, mailboxes, fences, pavers and even garden sculptures can all be simple, quick projects that, when painted in striking colours add immediate visual interest to your home exterior.
· Get the kids involved and make a painted wall-height chart on your hallway wall.
Whatever the weather’s doing outside, winter is the perfect time to turn your attention inward and make your home feel even more like you. These projects can make a big difference and give you that cosy, accomplished feeling without ever having to leave the house – apart from maybe visiting your local Resene ColorShop to grab your paint and supplies… or just buy what you need from the online Resene ColorShop and it will arrive to your doorstep.
