Home interior colour predictions for 2026: Part two

To help us look at what to expect in home design and colour trends for 2026, we turn to our wonderful and talented stylists who immerse themselves in this world each day. This week we speak to interior designer, Resene stylist and host of habitat by Resene’s podcast, If these walls could talk, Katrina Hobbs.

Looking ahead to 2026

“After years of soft neutrals and cautious choices, we’re seeing a bolder confidence returning to interiors for the year ahead,” says Katrina. “With the world in a state of uncertainty, we are craving warmth, mood and a sense of story to realign our spaces.

“The palettes on the rise blend natural depth with an undertone of optimism – think clay, honey, olive and tobacco alongside cooler mineral tones and the odd citrus twist. It’s a reaction to the beige fatigue of recent years; colour is once again becoming a way to express identity rather than play it safe.”

Try shades like Resene Half Spanish White, Sandstone, Pale Prim and Buttercup:

Surprising shades and pairings

“Expect to see unlikely partnerships making their mark – ochre with lilac, moss with dusty rose, and marine blue teamed with tobacco or rust. These combinations feel fresh because they don’t shout; they hum with quiet sophistication. There’s a move towards layered colour stories that nod to nostalgia while feeling utterly current. Even once-maligned shades like butter yellow and bottle green are making elegant comebacks when grounded with natural textures and plenty of light.”

To give you some visual inspiration of these pairings, try colours like Resene Bullwhip paired with Half Fog, and Golden Sand paired with Goblin:

Bringing the trend home

“For homeowners, the secret is balance. You don’t need to repaint the whole house to stay current with new colour trends. Introduce these emerging hues through a single room, cabinetry or painted furniture, then weave in complementary tones with textiles and art.”

Think about your own personal style and what you like and start from there. “If you lean more coastal, a sweep of Coast with warm neutrals like Quarter Canterbury Clay add that grounding depth,” Katrina says. “And for the quietly daring, a hint of Coral Tree beside Olive Green feels deliciously unexpected yet utterly sophisticated”:

“Think of colour as a rhythm flowing through the house rather than a single bold note – consistent enough to feel purposeful but varied enough to keep it interesting. The best interiors will continue to tell personal stories, simply with a richer, more confident palette.”

Let’s take a look at some of these colour trends and how they might look at home!

Neutral doesn’t have to mean boring, you can add depth and dimension with various hues, strengths and textures. Bring comfort and warmth into your home with tones like Resene Spanish White, Triple Spanish White, Quarter Spanish White, Colorwood Bask and White. For a coastal base, try Resene Coast like on these walls, paired with a warm neutral to ground the space, like this floor stained in Resene Colorwood Breathe Easy. Add pops of bold hues to suit your taste, like Heliotrope on this console table, Japonica on the coat stand, or Petal paired with Double Alabaster like on this patterned wall. Dusty pinks like Resene Coral Tree on this headboard and side table pair beautifully with deep greens like Forest Green on these walls. Bring in some neutrals to ground and calm your bolder hues, like this white chair, bedside table in Meringue and floor in Colorwood Breathe Easy.
