habitat Christmas décor series: The most stylish time of the year

We’re decking the halls (and the walls) again for week two of our habitat Christmas décor series. Last week we looked at charming neutrals and gentle greens, so this week we’re taking things up a notch with a bit of bright colour, including blushing pinks like Resene Paper Doll, bold greens like Resene Kaitoke Green and ocean blues like Resene Bermuda Grey.

One of the biggest Christmas trends for 2025 is the ‘bow’ theme, and our beautiful blue entryway demonstrates that this Christmas trend can be applied to any colour. While a soft blue and white palette isn’t your usual festive go-to – and you could certainly still do a more traditional red and green – it reflects nicely of Kiwi summers and days spent outdoors or at the bach. With classic walls and flooring in Resene Half Rice Cake, we’ve layered in blues like Resene Bermuda Grey on the door and console and Resene Halcyon on the lamp, artwork and accessories.

With the tree being the hero of this entrance, we’ve added decorations and presents adorned with bows and blues to tie the whole scheme together.

On the Christmas tree, we’ve layered a mix of painted, DIY and flocked decorations with velvet white bows to add some more dimension. The DIY letter decorations are a simple way to add some personal family touches by creating letters of each family member. You could even do this as a fun family activity together. Our decorations are painted in Resene Bermuda Grey, Resene Halcyon, Resene Half Halcyon and Resene Half Rice Cake.

Flip the table on the classic red and green theme and opt for something fun! Your home is your own and even at Christmas time it can reflect your unique personality. Here, we’ve gone for a neutral and mustard base, with walls in Resene Half Pearl Lusta, floor in Resene Double Pearl Lusta and an archway in Resene Putty. We’ve then added pops of jolly colour like a light fixture in Resene Paper Doll, coffee table in Resene Dust Storm, boxes in Resene Kaitoke Green and a mix of all these hues in décor and accessories. It’s a colour scheme that brings as much joy as Christmas itself!

You can buy some affordable decorations to paint, or give your old ones a new life by adding your favourite colours to them with Resene testpots. We’ve used a range of different shapes for ours but tied them into our colour scheme by painting them in Resene Putty, Resene Paper Doll and Resene Half Pearl Lusta.

You can also do the same with old boxes by painting them in the same colours as your theme, or go all out and paint some fun patterns or personal messages on there, depending on who you are gifting them to. We’ve painted our boxes in Resene Kaitoke Green, Resene Paper Doll, Resene Dust Storm, Resene Putty and Resene Half Pearl Lusta.

Stay tuned for next week, where our habitat Christmas décor series brings you more even more fun projects and touches to add around your home this season!
