An office transformed into a beautiful and functional family home

When Tina and her family saw their now home advertised on Trade Me as an office, they saw potential right away. Upon viewing the structure, Tina immediately felt that she could make it a home, so she tendered, won the auction, and then the Resene painting and wallpapering fun began.

Moving this office, built over a decade ago, to its new site was a major move and a new learning experience for the new owners, but the challenges paid off and they now have a home they are very proud of.

“We had never done anything like this before, and it was exciting to see the structure take shape as we moved it to its new location,” Tina says.

To create their modern, open-spaced kitchen, Tina installed new cabinetry, countertops, and appliances, creating a cohesive space they can cook, entertain and relax in. The light and open kitchen, painted in the soft complex beige of Resene Quarter Tea, has quickly become the heart of the home for the family.

“One of our favourite parts of the renovation was changing the tiny kitchen of the original office into a larger space that is now an open-plan living, dining and kitchen,” Tina says. “It's a bright and modern area that gets the full sun, and it has become a space that our family of four and twelve grandchildren find very user-friendly.”

“The inside of the original office, now our home, was initially painted in Resene Quarter Tea, and we liked it a lot so decided to keep this colour throughout our alterations,” Tina says. “However, to personalise each bedroom and add some colour, we added a feature wall of Resene wallpaper to give each room a unique look, while still blending seamlessly with the rest of the house.”

An elegant feature wall with Resene Wallpaper Collection 405811, from the Resene Denzo II Wallpaper Collection, was used in the master bedroom. The bold background colour mixed with the almost metallic toned pattern of peacocks, gives this room a sophisticated and classy look with the extra touches of fur cushions and subtle décor adding to the room’s elegance.

The other two bedrooms include feature walls with Resene Wallpaper Collection 539028, a traditional but modern coloured stripe from the Resene Club Botanique Wallpaper Collection, and Resene Wallpaper Collection 47408, a grey and white floral pattern that works well with the neutral walls throughout the room and rest of the home.

“Our biggest challenge during this process was moving the office to its new site,” Tina says. “It's not something that you do every day, and there was a lot involved in getting it established and consented, as well as developing the gardens.”

“However, it was worth it, and we have loved putting our personal touch on the place we now call home, thanks to Resene.”

Tina’s house has been transformed from an office building to a warm and welcoming home. With bright, modern features and personalised touches from Resene in each room, it is now a space that the whole family are proud of and love spending time in.

Top tip: As with paint colours it pays to observe wallpapers in your home at different times of the day in different types of light. Ask your Resene ColorShop for a sample and BluTack this to the wall to observe the tones of the wallpaper. When choosing a paint colour to match use Resene testpots to test how the paint or colours match or complement your wallpaper.

The dramatic and elegant pattern of Resene Wallpaper Collection 405811 from the Resene Denzo II Wallpaper Collection mixed with lush cushions and fabric give this room a sophisticated and classy feel. Surrounding walls and trims are painted in Resene Quarter Tea.

A traditional but modern coloured stripe was used for this bedroom - Resene Wallpaper Collection 539028 from the Resene Club Botanique Wallpaper Collection giving the room an added sense of height. The colours in the wallpaper complement the shades used on the bedding and décor around the room giving a cohesive feel. The surrounding walls and trims are painted in Resene Quarter Tea and the ceiling is painted with Resene Zylone Sheen White.

Adding some depth and interest to this room, the floral pattern in Resene Wallpaper Collection 47408, from the Resene Habitat Wallpaper Collection, blends perfectly with the grey and white décor in the room, and the walls painted in Resene Quarter Tea. The ceiling is painted with Resene Zylone Sheen White.

The new open-plan kitchen, dining and living area is brightened up by the warm neutral walls painted in Resene Zylone Sheen tinted to Resene Quarter Tea and ceiling in Resene White. The touches of wood and darker furniture help to break up the areas and add some depth in an otherwise monochrome space.

Neutral walls offer great opportunities for decorating, and Tina has done well to use simple but gorgeous touches around her home. The walls painted in Resene Quarter Tea pair well with pops of greenery and elegant artwork.
