Student Jamie Taylor took his creativity in a different direction by producing an elegant jumpsuit with his bold silk choice in zingy lime green shot with gold. Unsurprisingly, his paint shade inspiration was Resene Citrus. The wall is in Resene Golden Fizz, the beer flasks are Resene Wild Thing and the bottle and jars are Resene Citrus.

A cutting-edge cape dress, inspired by the paint colour Resene Rock Spray, is the result of fashion student Rachel Thessman’s creative vision. The wall colour here is Resene My Sin and the console table is in Resene Grenadier.

NZ Fashion Tech student Jimmie MacKay chose a rich, purple-toned silk, which was paired with Resene Sassy for his tailored coat-dress creation. The wall colour here is Resene Wonderland and the front chair is in Resene Séance.

Student Ashleigh Price designed a feminine yet strong dress from her Indian silk, inspired by striking Resene Pirate. The walls are in Resene Caberet, the plinth is in Resene Candy Floss and the finial and egg cup are in Resene Havoc.

Traditional shades of green have made way for more fashionable tones of aqua and teal, which presented student Ting Yu with the perfect opportunity to create a unique show-stopper garment. Inspired by Resene Deep Sea, this elegant dress is both fashion-forward and glamorous. The wall is in Resene Tradewind, the chair is in Resene Surfie Green and the shelves are in Resene Deep Sea.

Fashion forward

The little black dress takes a back seat this weekend when up-and-coming designers from New Zealand Fashion Tech join forces with Resene at New Zealand Fashion Week this week.

The students were tasked with transforming a traditional hand-woven silk sari, with its history of shape, pattern and draping, into a contemporary-chic garment worth of the runway. Each sari’s jewel-like tones were inspired by a Resene paint colour.

Karen Warman of Resene says that for many years paint colours have been inspired by fashion trends. “It’s a nice twist to reverse the order and have paint colours used as inspiration for the catwalk.”

Six of the designs were showcased in rooms painted with Resene colour, styled by Emily Somerville-Ryan, photographed by Mike Rooke, and featured in the August issue of Next magazine.
