Renters rejoice! Just because you’re not the one who owns your home, it doesn’t mean you can’t decorate it and make it a space that you love. With a bit of Resene paint and wallpaper you can add easy, non-damaging changes to your space to make it colourful and enjoyable. These ideas also work well for homeowners who want to decorate but don’t want to repaint walls yet. Check out these ideas to get you inspired!

Allow the beauty of flora and fauna to fill your bedroom. Whatever your wall colour, you can work around it to add pops of colour on accessories. We’ve added a temporary headboard for a luxurious feel and painted some of our favourite Resene paint colours onto décor such as the table and vases. Choose colours that you love and create a space that reflects your personality – and most of these options will only require you to purchase Resene testpots which will save money and allow you to try out many new colours!

If you’ve got a dark bedroom like this one, try deep reds like Resene Persian Red and Resene Salsa, or rich greens like Resene Palm Green and Resene Goblin. If your walls are a light shade or white, you might want to add some pops of gentle pastels with Resene Charlotte, Resene Time Out, Resene Reef and Resene Tuft Bush.

Wonders with wallpaper

That’s right, wallpaper isn’t just for your walls, you can use it as art too! In this living room, we have cut three sections of Resene Wallpaper Collection 91310, a tropical print, to create artwork for the wall. You could even try three different designs if you want to get really creative. Most rentals have simple wall colours, so this is a great way to spruce up your walls and create your own unique space. Try an animal print like Resene Wallpaper Collection 751741, a pop of floral like Resene Wallpaper Collection DGN102247169 or a modern, chic design like Resene Wallpaper Collection 38824-1.

Out of the blue

Art is a great way to add colour to your rental without making any permanent changes, and you can even paint your own artwork like we did using Resene testpots. Using your favourite piece of art to base your home’s colour scheme off is also a great way to creative a harmonious and cohesive space. We used colours from within our artwork and painted them onto other décor and furniture like the desk, chair, plant pot and vases. The plus side is, when you move to a new house you can take all of your gorgeously coloured items with you!

Try using shades on the same colour card that work well together, for example, three greens that pair beautifully together are Resene Surf Crest, Resene Spring Rain and Resene Amulet. Or you might like to try burnt oranges like Resene Whiskey Sour, Resene Tuscany and Resene Chelsea Gem.

Portable privacy

Versatile furniture like this moveable privacy screen is great for renters! It lets you customise your outdoor area without the need for permanent fixtures. The dark shade of Resene Woodsman Pitch Black also provides an eye-catching contrast to the vibrant green of plants in your garden.As well as offering privacy it provides a moveable shade screen during sunny days, protection from the wind in winter, and can be stored when not required. Functional and fun

Cork flooring is a cost-effective solution to getting new flooring, and is not as permanent as other options. In fact, your landlord might be fine with you using cork tiles on your floor for their ability to decrease noise, provide ease of cleaning and be easily removed in the future. You can also decorate the tiles in a fun pattern like this one! You don’t have to stop there though. This side console uses two cork tiles and some Resenetestpots to create a funky design and you can even connect the colours to other furniture in your house to create a cohesive look.
