David and Jenny’s coastal beauty comes alive

Their Tauranga home was still in its original 1960s condition when David and Jenny discovered it – solid, but dull. With their children now working, the couple were ready to move to their next stage of life. They knew they wanted to update the property and turn it into a relaxed comfortable home yet still respect the home’s original architecture, so they looked to David’s brother, award-winning architect John Mills of JMA, for a total redesign of the layout and colour scheme. Using a palette of fresh and inviting Resene paints, the rejuvenated homethoroughly complements its coastal locationwithout losing the charm of its heritage.

The choice of colours were the key to personalising the home and providing a fresh feel to the new bach-style layout, David explainsResene Escape wraps around a feature wall in the stairwell, linking the open living area upstairs and the entryway downstairs. Brown Resene Sambuca in the living room and green Resene Ranger in the kitchen echo the lush green garden outside and bring a cooler feel to Tauranga’s semi-tropical location. Calming Resene Escape continues into the master bedroom, with mustard gold accents in the bedding, a perfect match to the Resene Thumbs Up walls in the second living room.

The specific hues chosen were in response to the parts of the home that honour its 1960s heritage, from the recycled wrought iron, selected timber surfaces and retro lights and furniture – with plenty of light to bring out the best in each colour, says David.

“Visitors often say they just feel relaxed as soon as they walk in.The colours are key to achieving this feel, and we feel the same as well.”

On top of the new colour scheme, the reno also included a full strip and rebuild of the interior. No additional floor area was added. Instead, JMA re-planned the entire interior and rearranged spaces in order to maximise the open plan living areas.

“The original flooring and stairs were stripped back and refurbished, original wrought iron balustrades were re-purposed and new, bigger window and door openings deliver generous flow to outside areas on both levels,” explains John.

Skylights, shutters and full height doors were also installed to work some interior magic, he says. These open onto a big curved deck, where a bench seat sits under the branches of a sprawling Pohutukawa tree outside.

The result, says John, was the change from a solid, but dull “Nana house” into a groovy, open, relaxed and colourful home. It’s also resulted in delight and pride from his client, David and his whanau.

David’s final advice for achieving a similar look: “be bold, use colour boards to plan out your design and don’t compromise. And trust your designer.”
