Cosy courtyards and brilliant balconies on Three’s The Block NZ this week

Week eleven on Three’s The Block NZ saw the teams venturing into the outdoors to create some jaw-dropping courtyards & balconies. With looming deadlines and tight spaces, the teams rallied to finish their decks, fences and outdoor living areas. Their home’s exteriors also got a refresh with bold Resene paint, including Resene Element, Resene Half Athens Grey and Resene Zircon.

Dylan & Keegan, having previously received the Resene Eco.Decorator prize, had their home expertly painted in Resene CoolColour Element by professional painters, leaving the team free to work on their sophisticated courtyard. Resene Eco.Decorators are a network of sustainably minded painters from around the country who meet environmental standards, so you can enjoy a quality finish with peace of mind.

The games were on this week with the realestate.co.nz open home game changer challenge, with the teams visiting five open homes to estimate their current median valuation. Meg & Dan took out the $8000 prize.

The teams got a boost with the family cleaning day, with members of their family rolling up their sleeves to help the teams clean their houses. The teams competed in the marshmallow catapult game changer with their families and Connie & Rach won themselves an undo and the opportunity to take $1000 from another team.

It was another dramatic room reveal this week, with Tim & Arthur disqualified for a breach of site rules. Dylan & Keegan played a -2 on Meg & Dan and used their +1. Ultimately, Dylan & Keegan claimed the $7000 room reveal prize with their cosy courtyard.

We take a closer look at the four courtyards & balconies this week:

Dylan & Keegan’s Winning Courtyard & Balcony

Final Score: 21/30

Dylan & Keegan created a cosy courtyard with an outdoor fireplace built into a Rockcote Integra lightweight concrete structural wall supplied by Resene Construction Systems painted with Resene Truffle. Their house’s exterior is in Resene CoolColour Element. The dark fence in Resene Woodsman Crowshead complements the team’s colour choices.

Dylan & Keegan’s winning cosy courtyard popped against their home’s exterior weatherboards, fascias and facing boards in Resene CoolColour tinted to Resene CoolColour Element. Resene Element is a warm, dark and mysterious shade of earthy stone.  Made using the Resene CoolColour technology it reflects more heat to help keep the paint and surface cooler. They created contrast with a Rockcote Integra lightweight concrete structure fireplace from Resene Construction Systems painted in Resene Truffle.

The judges thought the team had created a beautiful outdoor space with good privacy and excellent styling. “There’s been a lot of thought put into this space,” says Lauren. “This caters to everything for me. You’ve got the space to sit, relax and chat. It’s got a more formal option to sit and eat. It feels like you could use this space pretty much all year round.”

Dylan & Keegan’s secluded courtyard is given depth thanks to their home’s dark exterior in Resene CoolColour Element.

Connie & Rach’s Courtyard & Balcony

Final Score: 14/30

Connie & Rach created an inspiring courtyard and entertaining area with a timber pergola and outdoor seating that pops against the Resene Zircon fence.

Connie & Rach’s courtyard & balcony created an elegant atmosphere in their outdoor area. With a whimsical timber pergola, extensive modern barbeque space and monochromatic seating choices, their courtyard is a fabulous extension of their home’s interior. The courtyard was brightened by the home’s exterior weatherboards, fascias and facing boards in Resene Zircon, an icy white with a hint of blue.

The judges thought the courtyard was well thought out and that the team had created a functional space. They appreciated the smaller touches the team had made, such as their inclusion of heaters in the space for winter. “What a great use of space,” says Lauren. “It’s got a real jungle feel to it. Great appliances as well.”

Connie & Rach’s deck perfectly complements the exterior weatherboards, fascias and facing boards in Resene Zircon.

Meg & Dan’s Courtyard & Balcony

Final Score: 17.5/30

Meg & Dan created a simple and elegant courtyard this week. Their choice of vertical planters gave the area a good sense of height and their choice of greenery popped against their dark fence in Resene Woodsman Crowshead.

Meg & Dan brought their exterior to life using Resene Half Athens Grey on the weatherboards, fascias and facing boards. The delicate grey violet undertones of Resene Half Athens Grey complement the decking and warm timber décor.

The judges thought the team’s upstairs balcony was a lovely simple space, great for a morning coffee. They thought Meg & Dan had also created a great family space below on their wrap-around deck and courtyard. “It’s very nice,” says Ann-Louise. “They’ve done such a good job here, it’s never easy to dress an L-shape.” Lauren loved the layout of the barbecue area and thought the spaces the team had created were very usable and marketable.

Meg & Dan’s exterior weatherboards, fascias and facing boards are in Resene Half Athens Grey, which complements their outdoor picnic area and fence in Resene Woodsman Crowshead.

Tim & Arthur’s Courtyard & Balcony

Final Score: 18/30 (disqualified)

Tim & Arthur’s elegant balcony features an outdoor dining area that is colour coordinated with their exterior weatherboards, fascias and facing boards in Resene CoolColour Element.

Tim & Arthur’s Resene CoolColour Element exterior worked perfectly with their choice of deeply stained timber and modern black dining furniture. They created an outdoor area on their balcony using simple lines to create a sophisticated space that they surrounded with bright greenery. The large sliding doors lead into the kitchen, creating a great indoor/outdoor living space.

The judges loved the indoor/outdoor flow and thought all the spaces connected beautifully, including the colour of the deck that tied in well to the kitchen cabinetry. “I think it’s a great space,” says Ann-Louise. “The chairs are great, the table’s great, the colour of the deck is great.” Chris agreed, saying it flowed seamlessly from the kitchen and nicely from both ends of the living spaces.

Resene CoolColour Element makes a bold statement on the weatherboards, fascias and facing boards of Tim & Arthur’s house. The timber elements of their balcony give the exterior a natural connection.
