Calm tones and thoughtful texture in Bondi Beach

Sitting in Bondi Beach, with postcard views of Sydney’s Harbour Bridge and the Opera House, this two-bedroom apartment was treated to a complete and carefully considered redesign. The home is in the Rockwall building in Potts Point and was originally set for only minor updates, but like many projects, the scope soon grew.

The designer, Nadine Donazzan of DNADesign, worked with Resene finishes to bring softness, sophistication and an understated sense of luxury to the interiors while ensuring the colours complemented the remarkable outlook.

“The primary objective was to orchestrate a sophisticated, masculine, understated, luxurious renovation, showcasing the captivating panorama,” says Nadine.

The bedroom features Resene Scrub with Resene Quarter Truffle on the ceiling and Resene Eighth Truffle on trims.

One of the bedrooms has been reimagined as a flexible study and guest room, with a feature wall in Resene Scrub, the bathrooms have been entirely renewed and the kitchen was fully redesigned. Renovating within a strata building meant working within tight parameters and collaborating closely with experienced trades to achieve a seamless finish.

Colour selection was integral to shaping the apartment’s mood. “Any high-end project commands the best quality products that will not only provide longevity but also the best durability and colour fastness when working with paint,” says Nadine.

In the study, the custom-built cabinetry is painted in Resene Napa, with Resene Quarter Truffle on walls.

“The use of the Resene waterborne enamels on my projects always provides me with the greatest reassurance of not only beautiful and unique sheen levels but coatings that my clients can easily clean as they have exceptional washability and they look and are high end.”

Throughout the living spaces, the walls are finished in Resene Quarter Truffle for a soft and cohesive tone. This subtle shade creates a calm foundation and sits comfortably with the light. The timber doors, skirting and trims continue the effect in Resene Eighth Truffle which gives just enough difference to define the details without breaking the gentle flow.

Resene Half Thorndon Cream adds a touch of warmth and charm to the bathroom cabinetry.

To connect the home with its elegant custom curtains and the bespoke carpet tones, the external doors, frames and windows are coated in Resene Dune, adding a hint of contemporary depth.

The bathrooms called for a shade that could hold its own among layered materials. Resene Half Thorndon Cream was used for the cabinetry, chosen for its ability to tie together the tiles and the statement Verdi Aphi marble. In the study, cabinetry in Resene Napa builds a soft, masculine and tailored mood, paired with Axolotl benching that gives the room texture and quiet presence.

Kitchen cabinetry is painted in Resene Midnight Moss, with surrounding living area walls in Resene Quarter Truffle.

The kitchen is where the colour story becomes most striking. The cabinetry is finished in Resene Midnight Moss, a deep shade with a green undertone that only appears in certain light. “This was THE colour that the whole renovation stemmed from. This colour was vital as it needed to look like a dark green, with only the slightest hint of the green undertone in certain light.” The tone works beautifully with Axolotl panels and titanium natural stone, creating depth and drama without overwhelming the senses.

Resene Quarter Truffle was used on the main walls, an earthy tone that pairs well with the kitchen cabinetry in Resene Midnight Moss. Trims are painted in Resene Eighth Truffle.

This project was not without its challenges. The kitchen layout had to be completely rethought when hidden gas pipes were discovered, a moment that led to an inventive curved pantry design. A bespoke carpet had to be recreated after the original supplier ceased trading. Tiles intended for the bathroom were damaged in transit, prompting a swift search for alternatives that preserved the visual intention.

Nadine describes the process as one of problem-solving and precision. “Our project exemplifies resilience, creativity, and unwavering dedication to excellence in the face of adversity.”

The result is a home that feels calm, refined and confidently anchored to its setting. A balance of thoughtful detailing, warm finishes and a carefully tuned palette allows the interior to sit quietly while the view, as intended, does all the talking.

Top tip: When painting walls the finished result will reflect the effort put in to preparing the surface and the selection of the best sealer. Often overlooked or considered generic - “any sealer will do!” - wallboard sealers can make or break the final topcoat finish. Resene Waterborne Sureseal is new product with multiple uses including over compromised wallboards, while Resene Broadwall Surface Prep and sealer will help disguise imperfections and improve the level of finish, it is particularly useful in areas with critical light issues and / or if using strong colours.
