Towering tui makes a vibrant statement on the wall of a Howick café

Joel Nicholls’ work on Auckland café Urban East brings a tui to life. He used Resene French Pass, Resene Bondi Blue and Resene Chetwode Blue to achieve this striking work. Joel finds it an ideal place to enjoy a coffee.

East Auckland artist Joel Nicholls was one of the winners of the recent Keep New Zealand Beautiful and Resene Nature Murals Competition – and his nature-inspired mural of a pūkeko has led to other large-scale works.

His latest mural is a towering tūī - a commission from the owner of Urban East Café, Howick. Joel draws inspiration from the natural world around him. With only brief studies in various art forms growing up, Joel is mostly self-taught and has an interest in drawing, painting and graphic arts.

Joel’s award-winning mural ‘Water, Water, Water Everywhere’ for Keep New Zealand Beautiful and Resene Nature Murals Competition.  He used Resene Black and Resene White along with Resene Roadster and Resene Chetwode Blue and it can be seen across from the New World carpark in Howick.

The Resene Nature Murals Competition, which is part of the Paint New Zealand Beautiful programme, runs annually with artists encouraged to submit mural designs which include an environmental message.

Artists from around the country send in their designs, with the top ten murals selected based on their environmental message, enhancement of the community, and originality. Winning designs receive a $1000 grant upon completion, along with a $750 Resene paint voucher and other materials to paint their mural.
