Learn to paint with a colour maestro

Rotorua artist Janet Keen has made art her business by setting up an after-school studio where students take lessons and develop their own art.

“I teach them many different styles so that it keeps their creativity alive and free from boredom. I have over 60 different lessons that they can explore, many of my students have been with me for over five years because they are always learning something new,”

says Janet.

She has been teaching art for over 20 years and has daytime classes for adults too.

“I love teaching, it gives me an amazing sense of achievement and it makes the time fly,” she says.

“I love cats. I have painted a number of pop art cats. I love all animals so I am interested in depicting them in a colourful pop art, naïve and unrealistic way,” artist and teacher Janet Keen says. This painting sings with Resene Black, Resene White, Resene Resolution Blue, Resene Kingfisher Daisy, Resene Tango, Resene Galliano, Resene Hashtag, Resene Colour Me Pink, Resene Oyster Bay, Resene Regent St Blue, Resene Blue Chill, Resene Groovy, Resene Maestro, Resene Hot Chile, Resene Forest Green, Resene Turbo, Resene Endeavour, Resene Hippie Pink and Resene Belladonna, all painted using Resene testpots.

Of her own art, she says, “I have a very eclectic style. I love experimenting with all sorts of subject matter and techniques in my paintings.” Whether its pop art or pet and wild animal paintings, or decoupage works that include moulded modelling paste and paint, Janet always has something on the go.

“The one thing I have in common with the styles is that I always use Resene testpot colours and mediums,” she says.

Resene Poppy, a vibrant red, is her favourite. “I believe a lot of paintings can be lifted by a touch of red. Red makes me feel happy, it is an alive and active colour. It represents drama, danger and delight. You can’t ignore red because it is never boring.”
