HOMEmade recap: Karl and Ida’s mid-century makeover

05 Dec 2018

Ida and Karl’s 1950s home had great bones but it was too cold and was looking a little old with its original wallpaper, carpet and glittery ceiling. The couple love the house, which they live in with their two children, because it reminds them of the houses they grew up in, but wanted it to be lighter and brighter with a more modern feel.

Inside, the HOMEmade team decided to tackle the bathroom and toilet which had not been touched since the 1950s. Designer Melissa Greenough added a new freestanding bath and a double vanity. The team also replaced the old carpet with fresh floor and wall tiles with the use of bold Resene Log Cabin on the upper walls with trim in Resene Black White. The team also tiled the toilet floor and gave the room new life with Resene Wallpaper Collection design AT7071 from Resene ColorShops, on all four walls.

Outside, the HOMEmade team, led by designer Dan Mackay turned an overgrown garden into a focal point of the backyard. To do that the team set a stone seat among the grasses and fruit trees, with feature picture frame sculptures. To retain some privacy an established hedge was planted and a tall fence was built and painted Resene Black to create a chicken enclosure for four new chickens.
