HOMEmade recap: Extra space for Jo’s family cottage

22 Nov 2018

When Liverpool-born Jo returned to New Zealand with her Kiwi children – and the family dog - she bought her 1940s Auckland cottage within a few months.

She loves the quirkiness of the cottage but finds it a bit small and wanted the home to be opened up to allow more light. She would also wanted to have a better outdoor dining area.

When the HOMEmade team arrived at Jo’s place, they addressed the space issue straight away by deciding to knock down a wall between Jo’s bedroom and a storage room to create a large master bedroom. Designer Melissa Greenough also added in a false wall to create a small walk-in wardrobe.

In decorating the space with Resene Half Tea on the upper walls, Resene Rascal on the lower walls and Resene Soothe on the wardrobe they have kept to a warm coastal theme, reflecting the home’s location close to the beach. The result is a simple, calm space for Jo to relax in. The ceiling and window trims are Resene Black White.

Outside, garden designer Dan Mackay opted to take on the property’s front yard and entrance which was chaotic and overgrown. He added in a sitting area where the family could appreciate the garden around them. The team built a new front deck with seating and stairs for easy access to the front door. The outdoor table and fence were painted in Resene Black.
