Crafting a colourful haven: The design journey of a lounge space

22 Jun 2023

If you’re a lover of all things colour, then this remarkable lounge will catch your eye! This space seamlessly blends art, furniture, and vibrant colours to create a unique living space. This project, brought to life by the talented team at Colourbolt Interior Design, showcases the perfect harmony between spectacular artwork, intriguing décor and carefully chosen Resene paint colours.

The client's desire to feature a magnificent artwork by Virut set the tone for the entire project. The challenge was to find colours that complemented the art without overshadowing its brilliance. Colourbolt Interior Design, based in Nelson, embarked on a collaborative journey with the homeowners in Invercargill, utilising modern technology to bridge the distance. Through Zoom calls, photographs and phone conversations, the team explored ideas and took inspiration from the existing elements in the space.

The starting point for the colour palette came from the homeowners' two remarkable sofas (above). These vibrant pieces served as a vital link between the lounge and the open-plan living area. After careful consideration, the vibrant teal hue of one of the sofas was chosen as the anchor colour, effortlessly connecting the two spaces. Resene She'll Be Right, a teal blue full of bonhomie and positive affirmations, was the chosen shade.

This is such a great example of how you can tie two rooms together to create cohesion throughout your home, and it doesn’t always have to mean painting all of your walls the same colour. To achieve a sense of cohesion between the adjoining rooms, this Resene paint colour was thoughtfully incorporated into one space to match the colour of the couch in another. Resene She'll Be Right was used for both the fireplace wall surround and the console table in the lounge. The console, crafted by Woodwrights, features a high-gloss finish, adding a touch of sophistication to the space.

To balance these vibrant shades, the walls throughout the house were predominantly painted in Resene Black White. This allows the furniture to take centre stage while providing a neutral backdrop for all of the colourful accents.

This recently completed remarkable lounge marks a recent transformation that continues to captivate and inspire. The masterful use of colours and textures, combined with the homeowners' existing pieces, culminated in a space that radiates warmth and creativity. The lounge is a testament to the power of collaboration, innovative design, and the ability to transform a vision into a vibrant reality.

When asked about her favourite Resene colours, the talented designer behind Colourbolt Interior Design, Carley, found it difficult to choose just one. However, she highlighted Resene Indian Ink, Resene Half Smalt Blue from the Karen Walker Paints range, and Resene Cornflower as standout choices. These colours exemplify her appreciation for bold and captivating shades that can transform any space into a work of art.
