Blayne turns talents to own winning home

When you're the owner of a home renovating business, it's hard not to pick up a million and one decorating ideas along the way. And so when Blayne, owner of Sika Homes, and wife Steph bought a bungalow to renovate, they had plenty of inspiration.

The house was in almost original 1924 condition at the time, and it was decided to keep the existing house mostly unaltered. Many of the character features were retained and enhanced, using crisp whites and neutrals from the Resene range to freshen up the interior and exterior.

High vaulted ceilings and skylights were installed for a modern twist and to pull in plenty of natural light. A large rear extension and internal access garage underneath were also added.

Says Blayne: "I really enjoyed being able to make the small decisions. Having worked on many amazing houses over the years we had ideas inspired by some of these."

The home won a Registered Master Builders award, under the Builder's Own Home category.

He tells us more about the award-winning reno:

How did you decide on the overall look of the interiors?

We wanted to remain true to the 1924 bungalow character but without it being small, dark and cold feeling.

All finishings are quite detailed for character retention and painted in Resene Black White for contrast and accentuation. Numerous natural timber and concrete features are also added for a warm touch.

We also added a lot of natural light, with huge glass areas and four skylights with very high ceilings.

What part of the house are you happiest with?

The seamless flow throughout the house, from front door to garden. We also love our outdoor fire surrounded by couches and the barbecue area next to the spa.

What was the biggest renovating or building challenge for this project?

From a building perspective it’s not recommended to excavate underneath a house in a volcanic rock area but the risk did pay off, as we have a huge garage and haven’t lost any of the property area. We also have some very large spans in such an open area which took some serious engineering.

What is your advice for someone trying to achieve a similar look?

Decide on a budget, then add 50 per cent contingency, then double it!

Do you have a favourite colour, and if so why is it your favourite?

Resene Double White Pointer. You just can’t go wrong with this on a weatherboard house.

How did you find working with Resene paint and colours?

Too easy… it’s all we use. The only problem is deciding which white as there seems to be lots of options.
