An old bungalow is brought back to life with hard work and shadowy blues

Jason knows when to trust his instincts. When he first set eyes on this 1920s Californian bungalow in the heart of New Lynn, he immediately fell in love with its character and potential. A similar thing happened when he first set eyes on the oily midnight hue of Resene Shadowy Blue; “it was love at first brushstroke,” he says. In fact, this colour was such a hit, it became the feature hue inside his renovated bungalow.

When Jason purchased the bungalow in 2014, it was resplendent in a cheery 90s yellow colour scheme – which unfortunately didn’t fit in with his vision of a light and bright Scandi interior with references to the 20s and the bungalow’s heritage features.

An aviation technician by trade, and a handy man born and bred, Jason credits his self-professed “mechanical mind and can-do attitude” to the renovation’s success. The first room he completed was the master bedroom. It lacked proper storage, so he custom built a closet and installed it seamlessly into the room. For the colour palette, he chose Resene Sea Fog for the walls and Resene Alabaster for the ceiling – where he replaced the original battens with a simple ceiling rose. For a feature wall of tongue-and-groove panelling, Resene Shadowy Blue rose to the occasion. “The colour has such a character that changes with the light of the room,” he says. “From a teal in bright light to a deep moody blue in low light, and it shows off the details of the tongue-and-groove panelling very well.”

After the master bedroom had been satisfactorily modernised, it was the main bathroom’s turn for a refresh. “It was already modern and tidy, so I just used more of Resene Shadowy Blue panelling on the wall and bathtub to tie it in with the rest of the house,” says Jason. Resene Quarter Tea on the walls and Resene Alabaster on the ceiling and window trims were employed to bring some warm neutrals into the space. He also upcycled an old oak dresser to use as a vanity, resealing the wood with Resene Aquaclear waterborne urethane.

The open plan kitchen, living and dining area is the space Jason is most proud of. “I put a lot of effort into designing, demoing and then constructing, painting and finishing this space, and I feel it has really been transformed.” Now, as soon as you step foot inside of the house, you’re greeted by a beautifully light and modern kitchen. Resene Quarter Tea features on all the walls in the open plan area with Resene Alabaster on the ceiling and trims. Elegant matt black pendant lights in the kitchen add a modern touch.

From the side of the kitchen two bi-fold doors open up to reveal another pop of brilliant Resene Shadowy Blue in the laundry. Throughout the house original matai flooring is the timber hero. “When I first got the house all the trims were rimu and the doors were cedar, it made the house feel quite dark, so I decided to paint them in Resene Alabaster to help lift the light and make it feel fresh and clean,” says Jason. He also applied a few coats of Resene Qristal ClearFloor 1K on the floorboards to help them retain their colour and look and give them a satin finish.

After his impressive work inside the bungalow, Jason was ready to tackle the outside. The house already had Resene Eighth Stonehenge on the weatherboards, which had weathered well and didn’t require a top up. The window trims were repainted in Resene Quarter Gravel and the perfect finishing touch was a front door painted in Resene Indian Ink. So, even before you step foot indoors, you’re given a hint as to what colours you might expect to see inside.

blue bedroom feature wall tongue and groove

The master bedroom in Jason’s renovated bungalow used to be the lounge. He custom built the closet and demolished the old window seat to transform it into a bedroom. Resene Shadowy Blue makes a grand statement on the tongue-and-groove wall behind the bed. Resene Sea Fog on the rest of the walls and Resene Alabaster on the ceiling, doors and trims provide the perfect neutral base.

blue bathroom feature wall tongue and groove

Resene Shadowy Blue features again in the main bathroom on the same tongue-and-groove panelling and Resene Quarter Tea on the walls with Resene Alabaster on the ceiling and window trims help to create a modern, fresh look. The old oak dresser has been refurbished and sealed in Resene Aquaclear waterborne urethane varnish and given a new use as a vanity.

White kitchen wooden island

The kitchen is unrecognisable, says Jason. He chose Resene Quarter Tea for the walls and Resene Alabaster for the ceiling and window trims. The original matai timber floors, which have been sealed with Resene Qristal ClearFloor 1K, also add warmth.

White kitchen blue laundry

To the side of the kitchen, behind bi-fold doors, is the hidden gem – a sapphire gem – of Resene Shadowy Blue in the laundry. Resene Quarter Tea on the kitchen walls is teamed with Resene Alabaster on the window trims and ceiling.

Neutral contemporary living room

The open plan space needed to have consistency to allow the eye to move through seamlessly, so Jason has painted the walls in Resene Quarter Tea and the ceiling and trims in Resene Alabaster. The matai timber floors have been finished in Resene Qristal ClearFloor 1K.

Bedroom white walls panelling

The spare bedroom used to be dark and dingy. Today, with Resene Sea Fog on the walls and Resene Alabaster on the ceiling and window trims, it’s now light and bright. Pops of colours in hues like Resene Half Pale Rose, Resene Grass Hopper and Resene Matisse feature on the bed.

bungalow exterior

The original exterior colour, Resene Eighth Stonehenge, was in brilliant condition, so Jason didn’t need to repaint the weatherboards. He did freshen up the window trims with Resene Alabaster.

blue door

Resene Indian Ink on the front door perfectly sets the mood for the oily midnight hues inside Jason’s renovated bungalow. The exterior is painted in Resene Eighth Stonehenge and the trims in Resene Alabaster.
