A hillside haven with coastal warmth
This coastal home, on a hillside near Lyttelton, is all about serenity and balance. With sweeping views of the ocean and a backdrop of bush-covered hills, you could say this home was always destined to be something special. And it’s the restrained and tranquil Resene palette that truly brings the magic to life.
Rather than trying to compete with the bolder exterior, interior designer Lucy Wilkie leaned into its richness by building an interior palette that feels gentle, light and inviting. At the centre of this interior story you’ll find Resene Biscotti. This warm, delicate hue appears throughout this home in varying strengths, allowing each space to feel connected yet distinct.
The warmth and refinement of Resene Quarter Biscotti creates a welcoming feel in this open plan dining and living space.
The kitchen is a coastal dream, painted in Resene Quarter Biscotti and grounded with warm timber flooring and earthy tones. If you’re planning on new timber flooring, you can easily keep it protected with Resene Qristal ClearFloor 1K or if you have an older timber floor you can refresh it with Resene Colorwood first and then finish with Resene Qristal ClearFloor 1K.
In the main open-plan living, dining and kitchen area, which is made strikingly dramatic by its soaring ceiling and sky-high windows, Lucy opted for Resene Quarter Biscotti on both the walls and ceiling. This delicious mix of pink, white and beige offers a soft, luminous glow that catches the natural light beautifully while framing the views beyond.
The master bedroom takes on a more cocooned, intimate feel. Resene Double Biscotti adds depth and mood and is a nice retreat from the brighter Resene Quarter Biscotti in the living zones. Lucy’s use of layering is one of skill. As well as paint, she incorporates other neutral hues and textures through drapery, soft furnishings and décor. Every element feels like it truly belongs.
This master bedroom is a cocooning, intimate space, painted in Resene Double Biscotti with Resene Quarter Biscotti on the ceiling.
Moody in the evening, and dreamy in the daytime, Resene Double Biscotti is a stunning choice for these bedroom walls. The ceiling is painted in Resene Quarter Biscotti.
It's clear that every detail was considered in this home, and there’s a quiet confidence in the way the colour palette flows. The soft chocolate-toned chairs, the sandy warmth of the timber flooring, and the gentle biscuity hues on the walls. The use of Resene Quarter Biscotti in the kitchen, dining, study and laundry lend a soothing continuity making the house feel calm and cohesive.
The colour palette flows through the home connecting each space to the next. The ceiling is painted in Resene Quarter Biscotti and internal doors are painted in the slightly darker Resene Biscotti.
Although sticking almost solely to neutrals, it’s impressive how the home seamlessly links to the surrounding environment. Large windows frame ocean and hillside views and the subtle palette draws in the eye, but never fights for attention.
This Lyttelton home is a masterclass in restrained elegance, definitely one to put on your mood board if you love a neutral design. Resene Biscotti creates a sun-kissed interior that captures the very essence of coastal living. Relaxed, thoughtful and effortlessly beautiful.
Top tip: Your paint finish can impact how well your chosen white works in your room as the level of shine, whether it is gloss, semi-gloss, low sheen or flat, will change how it reflects light. A higher gloss finish, like Resene Enamacryl, will look lighter and brighter. A lower sheen finish, like Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen, will make the colour look softer and more diffused. A popular option is to use Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen on walls, Resene SpaceCote Flat on ceilings and Resene Lustacryl semi-gloss on trims, with Resene Enamacryl gloss on your front door.
