A 1930s coastal home finds a new life
Originally built in the mid 1930s in Tauranga’s city centre, this home has already lived more than one life. In the 1960s, it was relocated to its Papamoa beachside setting. And when its current owners came along, it was ready for a new chapter, despite the extensive work it needed.
The homeowners had a clear intention to renovate while preserving its character. A sense of history still runs through the home, but now it feels fresh, calm and connected to its coastal surroundings.
Working in real estate and architectural design, the owners approached the renovation with both practicality and creativity, shaping a home that feels thoughtful rather than overworked.

Of course, colour played a central role in bringing everything together. The palette was not chosen quickly however. Instead, paint swatches were lived with for months, allowing the changing light to guide their final decisions.
The homeowners say their aim was to create an ocean-inspired scheme that felt natural within the home’s setting.

Soft neutrals form the base, with Resene Sea Fog and Alabaster used across walls and trims. These tones create a gentle backdrop that enhance the natural light while allowing the beautiful architectural details to stand out. They also provide a sense of continuity throughout the home.
From there, the palette deepens into richer, more expressive tones. Resene Rolling Stone features prominently on the kitchen cabinetry and bootility area. It brings a layered blue-grey that shifts beautifully throughout the day, sometimes reading soft and coastal, while other times more grounded and moodier. This subtle movement is part of what makes the home feel alive.

Resene Big Stone is used on the kitchen island and in the dining room, adding contrast and anchoring the lighter elements. Paired with timber surfaces and open shelving, it introduces depth without losing warmth. The combination of painted cabinetry and natural materials keeps the space balanced, cosy and inviting.
The kitchen, laundry and dining areas have become the heart of the home and are a favourite part of the renovation. These spaces are designed for everyday living, and there is a quiet functionality to them, softened by layered textures and an eclectic mix of furnishings.

The homeowners say their interior style is best described as eclectic, but it is grounded in a classic approach. There is a mix of old and new, refined and relaxed, all tied together through colour and texture. Nothing feels too precious. And everything feels considered.
As with any older home, the renovation came with its share of challenges. The owners advise to “always prepare for the unknown”. And although a few challenges arose along the way, they say having the right team on the job made the hurdles easier to jump.

Among all the colours used, Resene Rolling Stone stands out as a favourite for the owners. Its ability to shift with the light adds depth and interest, making it a constant feature that evolves throughout the day.
This is a home that feels both timeless and personal. It honours its past while embracing a relaxed, coastal way of living, with colour and thought quietly shaping every space.
