A 1910 villa with a harmonious blend of traditional and modern

If you love a villa makeover as much as we do, this charming 1910 villa is sure to catch your eye. Painted in stunning Resene neutrals, this home is a testament to the seamless integration of vintage character and contemporary style.

Talented designer, Emma Parker from Cheltenham Rd Interior Design Collective, transformed her own home and property into a fresh new space, while also preserving its original essence. With a focus on creating spaces that foster harmony and versatility, Emma’s vision included extensions to accommodate various needs such as working from home, studying and relaxation.

The villa had been subjected to some intriguing additions over its years on both the front and back, including a blocked-in veranda that once housed a barber's shop. Emma’s desire for a modern touch led to the introduction of a new addition encompassing a kitchen, living and dining area, laundry, office and an exquisite master retreat on the upper level.

The brief was to maintain the villa's character on the original flat section, while infusing contemporary charm into the new spaces. The result is a captivating blend of glamour, bespoke elegance, and an industrial yet comfortable aesthetic.

Drawing inspiration from a polished stone discovered in Glenorchy, Emma worked to incorporate various design elements into the home. The combination of green-veined stone, dark wood and mixed metals against a moody green-grey palette has resulted in a captivating fusion of textures and colours.

Each room within the house exudes a unique ambiance, with colour playing a pivotal role in defining individual spaces. Despite the distinctiveness of each room, there is a cohesive visual and textural journey throughout the home, artfully blending modern and traditional elements. At the heart of the home's design lies a unifying element - Resene Quarter Foggy Grey, with its warm green undertones, acts as the chromatic glue that brings the entire scheme together.

In the kitchen, this shade not only complements the striking green marble used on the kitchen island benchtop and the cabinetry, but also provides a seamless connection between the upgraded original part of the home and the new living zones and master suite.

The elegant Resene Foggy Grey hue also finds its place in the hallway on walls, trims, and doors, where it serves as a backdrop to colourful and quirky artworks, complemented by a vibrant abstract runner. The ceiling is painted in Resene Alabaster, with a glossy Resene Black front door adding a touch of drama.

Adding to the overall allure, the formal living room, located at the front of the home, exudes the ambiance of a plush gentlemen's smoking room. Adorned with navy velvet curtains and painted in Resene Half Shark, a sharp-edged grey, the room boasts an atmosphere of sophistication. Resene Quarter Foggy Grey adorns the fireplace surround, contributing to the room's captivating charm.

Emma toyed with the idea of experimenting with different shades of white for the ceilings, but her fondness for Resene Alabaster and Resene Half Alabaster prevailed. These whites, with their timeless elegance, provide a perfect backdrop for the vibrant colours throughout the home.

The bedrooms each have their own unique style and décor, with touches of sophistication, luxury and Scandi. Resene Quarter Foggy Grey carries through to the master creating a cohesive feel with the rest of the home, while a subtle floral pattern, Resene Wallpaper Collection 384542, is featured in the teen bedroom.

“Guests visiting the home often find themselves captivated by the Resene Washed Green adorning the spare bedroom, however we found that capturing the true essence of this unique shade proves challenging in photographs, often appearing more grey than green,” Emma says. “Emma’s mother, whose favourite colour happened to be green, was a driving force in selecting Resene Washed Green for the spare room, a space eagerly awaiting her visit.”

The careful consideration given to the junctions between the old and the new extends to the external areas as well. A change in materials from weatherboard to vertical cedar creates an intriguing contrast. Resene Foggy Grey, applied to the remaining weatherboards, effortlessly melds with Wood-X Veil from Resene ColorShops on the thin strips of vertical cedar, resulting in a harmonious exterior that captivates the eye.

“The easy application with a paint pad made the process of using this product a joy for the painters,” Emma says.

When choosing a colour for the sleepout, an area visible from the street, the chosen colour had to harmonise with the Resene Foggy Grey weatherboards, Wood-X Veil on the cedar, Resene Gravel joinery and fencing in Resene Woodsman Tin. The chosen shade, Resene Double Trojan, struck the perfect balance, neither too yellow nor too blue.

“While the architectural brilliance of the house may conceal the new extension clad in vertical cedar from the street frontage, the local community often finds themselves knocking on the front door, intrigued by the stunning colours that adorn the exterior,” Emma says.

Most of the colours used internally feature a low sheen finish, ensuring a seamless and inviting ambiance. In the hallway, Resene Lustacryl semi-gloss waterborne enamel was applied to the wainscoting upper battens and hallway doors to facilitate easy cleaning.

By carefully selecting hues that complement each other and harmonise with the existing and new elements, Emma has achieved a beautiful blend of classic charm and contemporary elegance. The result is a truly captivating and unique home that celebrates the beauty of colour and design.

Top tip: When you’re finishing your timber outside, remember to do your deck too.  Many homes leave decks unstained only to regret it later when they see how much they get ravaged by the weather.  If you’re after a natural look, choose a Resene Woodsman Decking Oil Stain colour as close to your timber’s colour as possible.  This will help it keep looking good for longer.. See Resene ColorShops nationwide for a copy of the Resene Exterior Timber Stains colour chart, or order a copy online.
