Sparkling joy: James Peters proves bronze is the new gold in this apartment with the wow factor

Interior designer James Peters saw nothing but opportunity when he saw the white walls of the apartment he owns with his partner. The two busy professionals, wanted a cosy haven to unwind in at the end of the day; a place where they could relax and entertain in style. Luckily, he had a special Resene colour in mind that he’d been eager to try.

James has won multiple awards for his designs over the years and has a wealth of experience, including working with talented architects such as Oli Booth who this year won a Best Design Award. Something James has learnt over the years is that being brave with colour can have great results. This time he added a little sparkle to his space with Resene FX Metallic paint tinted to Resene Spark, a beautiful bronze.

James points out that the bronze tones he chose work to complement the neutral walls and ceiling in and window trims in Resene Heathered Grey as well as the furniture and rugs. The colour also showcases the artwork within the home.

“Sometimes being daring with colour pays off. A dash of colour in the right space can create an inspiring, original interior design. In my opinion, careful colour concepts in interiors contribute immensely to a more interesting environment,” he says.

“I have used Resene paints over many decades and have never been disappointed at the results.”

James’ observation is that white paints have become even more popular over time — and he thinks it's time for us to push the boat out and add colour to more residential homes and commercial properties.

Bronze is a colour he had been eager to work with but wasn’t sure of the exact Resene colour to try. The Resene Colour Expert at the Newmarket Resene ColorShop helped him bring his concept to life.

Resene Spark works particularly well at night and during sunny days, it reduced glare from the otherwise stark white walls in the rest of the apartment which can be hard on the eye when reflecting sunrays,” says James.

“The effect of the bronze metallic paint softens the interior environment. It is easy on the eye and with the glass sliders, white walls painted in Resene Eighth Ash and wooden flooring, the bronze colour contributes to a more warm and cordial atmosphere.”

Top tip:

A basecoat is required for all Resene FX Metallic paints. The Resene Metallics and Special Effects colour chart recommends a matching basecoat next to each colour to make it easy to find the right basecoat – in this case the base colour for Resene Spark is Resene Domino. The end look can vary depending on application, technique, substrate texture, lighting and product.   Resene FX Metallic paints are available in testpots so be sure to trial a test patch if doing your own DIY at home.

To achieve a smooth result when using a roller with Resene FX Metallic paints ensure you lay-off  (remove extra paint from the brush) consistently in the same direction. Cutting-in should be limited to the first coat only. Use masking tape to get close to the edges and paint opposite walls first and use 5% Resene Hot Weather Additive to slow down the drying time and maintain a wet edge. This will allow the metallic flakes to settle down better. For very large areas, such as walls, mask the job into smaller sections.

Resene FX Metallics may be roller applied to textured surfaces, however, you need to be careful to avoid runs caused by paint caught in the hollows of the texture. Lay-off in one direction.

For a fine finish needed for a door, lay-off with a foam roller and follow with a glaze coat for maximum durability.

The most stand out metallic effect is best achieved by spray – we recommend hiring a professional painter if you have a large area to do.

Once the metallic paint is dry, finish in Resene Aquaclear (interior) or Resene Concrete Clear (exterior) for extra protection from wear and tear.

James’ finished home glows with colour thanks to the Resene FX Metallic Spark applied over a basecoat of Resene Domino from Resene Multi-finish range. The colour creates a warm, modern feel and complementing the ceiling and skirting in Resene Eighth Ash. Protect wooden flooring with Resene Colorwood Natural wood stain protected with Resene Qristal ClearFloor.

The warm walls painted in Resene FX Metallic Spark continuing into the kitchen tie in with the timber cabinetry. Skirting, ceiling and back walls in Resene Eighth Ash serve to lighten up hidden corners. The minimal modern décor shows off James’ bronze vision.

Resene Heathered Grey is used on the window architraves next to the aluminium joinery, providing a fine contrast against the walls in Resene Eighth Ash which brighten up the space in this quaint home office.

The pop of lavish golds in this minimalist bedroom is the perfect example of pairing lively colours with Resene Eighth Ash which covers the walls and skirting. Resene Heathered Grey is used on the window architraves next to the aluminium joinery to define and frame the windows.

Resene Eighth Ashpainted on the bedroom walls, skirting and ceiling provides a soft and calm atmosphere for winding down without over-lightening the room and being harsh on the eyes.

The walls, skirting and ceiling of this media room are painted in Resene Eighth Ash creating a calm and tranquil sitting area. This popular Resene colour is a softened muted smoky beige, delicate and warm to the touch.
