There's a fine line between creating a space that's visually striking and one that feels like home, but homeowner and interior designer Emma Brown has done just that. Her architecturally designed four-bedroom home is now a haven for her growing family, dripping with personality and bathed in charming Resene paints.
Wanting something that was more than just a place to lay their heads, Emma viewed this project as a canvas for self-expression. With a brief to push boundaries and defy expectations, every nook and cranny of this residence was curated to reflect the unique tastes and personalities of the family.

The main living space beckons with its audacious pink and black kitchen. Hand-blown pendants cast a warm glow over custom joinery painted in Resene Soothe, while pops of colours dance playfully throughout the room. Functionality meets flair in the heart of this home, creating a space that's as practical as it is eye-catching.

It’s not just the main living areas that are infused with colour. Each bedroom tells its own story and reflects each member of the family. From the split-design of the girl's room, with contrasting Resene wallpapers and a custom headboard, to the mandarin orange against the Resene All Black walls of the teenage boy's domain, every space is truly unique.
A moodier palette was chosen for the master bedroom using Resene Half Smalt Blue. The custom headboard along with pops of accented colour in décor creates a space where luxury meets tranquillity in perfect harmony. “A custom-fluted blue animal print headboard with dark grey and soft lilac bedding was installed to finish the space,” says Emma.

Of course, no project is without its challenges, but for Emma and her family, the journey was as enjoyable as the destination. “Our home was designed to have personality which suited each member of our family,” says Emma. “This did not create a difficult challenge, but more of a fun design challenge.”

In the end, what has emerged is more than just a house, it is a home filled with love, laughter, and a whole lot of personality.

Top tip: When opting for dark and dramatic colours, keep in mind that you may need to adjust your lighting to suit. Use lamps, accent lighting and dimmer switches to help create the right mood. Choose flat or low sheen finishes, such as Resene SpaceCote, to bring out the moodiness of dark colours.
