Understated coastal charm in Castlepoint with Resene Sea Fog and Resene Silver Sand

Peer out the window of this Wairarapa Coast home and you might spy fur seals, dolphins or nesting gulls. Perched on a hilly corner in Castlepoint, this home is character-packed and decked out head to toe in stunning Resene hues like Resene Hot Chile and Resene Sea Fog.

Chapple Architecture’s Susie Elms was tasked with bringing the home to life. “Our initial brief was a compact home with office that had views of the lighthouse, with a separate space for family visits to double as a self-contained Airbnb, called Lily’s Lodge.”

The owners wanted a home that offered an escape from the hustle and bustle of the Wellington CBD. “As working from home became the new normal, it made sense for the owners to make the Castlepoint Escape their permanent home.”

The large site had a number of restrictions due to no-build areas, right of way and easements, with a building platform that was small, but perfectly situated to take advantage of the view out to the ocean.

“The compact and elevated site required clever multi-level design. The garage occupies the lowest level, with elevated accesses to the lodge and the house creating a natural hierarchy of space,” says Susie.

The owners chose a Resene colour scheme to create a modern clean look that was in keeping with the house design. The home’s walls were painted in Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen tinted to Resene Sea Fog, a soft white with a hint of grey. It’s a tone incredibly complementary to their ocean surroundings and the ever-changing landscape.

In keeping with the crisp and contemporary look, architraves and skirting across the home were painted in Resene Lustacryl semi-gloss waterborne enamel tinted to Resene White, and doors in Resene Lustacryl tinted to the elegant Resene Silver Sand, a grey silver salt hue.

“The Resene Hot Chile staircase was to create interest and a statement piece and to show a bit of their character!” The playful pop of brilliant red interplays with the owners’ art collection and vibrant furnishings. It offsets a playful and nautical touch present in blue-green hues, knotted rope light fittings and the rich, varied textures of the reclaimed American barn oak floor.

In the neighbouring Lily’s Lodge dwelling, it was important to have a space designed for reflection, Susie says. They wanted to create a ‘thinking space’ for the business leaders who come to be coached from the property.

“Relaxed colours that easily match to a range of internal decoration/soft furnishings was important. It can be dressed to be feminine or masculine, or more business-like just by using different bedlinen and cushions etc.” The combination of Resene Sea Fog, Resene White and Resene Silver Sand offered a very flexible colour scheme, she says.

“The ‘Thinking Space’ window fills the north-facing wall, drawing the eyeline beyond and connecting to the environment. The length of the room allows both owners to share equally in this inspirational view, blurring the line between work and play.” A bedroom window mirrors this geometric feature, giving cohesion to the separate structures.

From the balcony the oceanside home’s owners can observe four seasons in one day with container ships and birds on the horizon. “The lighthouse is visible from both Lily’s Lodge and the main house, especially the office where they spend a good chunk of their day. The final result is a permanent escape for the owners, alongside a temporary getaway they can share with others.”

Top tip: When you’re decorating, you’ll discover a wealth of Resene ‘whites’, with varying touches of yellow, green, brown or grey to turn them into a huge cast of interesting shades. The best place to start is with the Resene Whites & Neutrals collection, which is home to a host of whites as well as darker neutral colours – greys, beiges and blacks.

More than any other colour, whites and off-whites are influenced by other elements in the room. If you have off-white walls and a lot of green accessories, expect your walls to take on a green look. Use a strong blue rug or furniture, and your walls will pick up on the blue. You can use this to your advantage. For example if you have a rich reddish timber floor that you find a bit overpowering, then using a cool white on the walls (one with a grey or green base) will diffuse the effect of the floor. This stunning Castlepoint home’s neighbourhood sits oceanside, minutes from the beach. Aiming to protect your home from salt? Salt will bleed through waterborne paints and cause staining. Fresh salt deposits may be left by strong off sea winds requiring daily attention, but stains can be sealed off using Resene Sureseal.  Always wash off salt before repainting.
