Selina and Earl find inspiration close to home

16 Aug 2015

Inspired by the great southern landscape around their Canterbury home, Selina and Earl’s home is aptly anchored by the cool shale-like tones of Resene Half Rakaia. The Rakaia River actually runs not far from their rural home near Darfield, and their colour choices were drawn from a view of the Southern Alps.

What Resene colours have you used and what inspired those choices?

The main inspiration for the greys was from the colours of the Southern Alps in the Julie Greig artwork Taking a Breather that hangs in the lounge. We also have a lovely outlook of the Southern Alps from our home.

We had been renting an old, weatherboard farmhouse, which was very dated with beige walls and wallpapers so we knew we needed a light fresh feel to our new home. A grey was perfect and we wanted the whole house to flow so used Resene Half Rakaia on the north side of the home and then Resene Quarter Rakaia for the darker south side and the halls.

We wanted some feature walls throughout the home to add a bit of colour and personality, we didn’t have any particular furniture or decor accessories to show off so thought the house could end up looking a bit stark.

Resene Midnight Express is the feature wall in the lounge. I love navy, it was the accent colour in our wedding, and being such a bright room we knew the lounge would be able to handle it. We narrowed it down to two colours and Earl made the final decision, I was being too indecisive!

We wanted something bold but with a bit of romance for the main bedroom feature wall. I loved the idea of a deep purple but we decided on something a bit more muted. Resene Fedora fit the bill perfectly.

When I was pregnant with Haidee I bought a chest of plain pine drawers to paint. As we didn’t know what gender baby we were expecting I wanted colours that were gender neutral, so chose Resene Half Ashanti (pale teal) and Resene Half Shalimar (yellow). We carried the Resene Half Ashanti through to her bedroom as it’s a lovely calming colour which fits well with the Resene Quarter Rakaia.

We decided to use the Resene Half Ashanti in the bathroom and ensuite also just for a bit of fun as we kept the fittings in here really neutral and standard.

We used wrought iron style pendant lights throughout the house to add to the traditional feel and add a bit of personality.

What part of the house are you most happy with?

I love the kitchen. We wanted a more traditional look so used traditional style handles and a subway tile splashback. The decision to do the wall surrounding the splashback in Resene Double Alabaster (the same as the ceiling, trims and doors) was a good one. It meant the tiles could be anchored on that wall without competing with the pale grey of the Resene Half Rakaia.

What is your advice for someone trying to achieve a similar look?

Trust your instincts and take your time choosing your colours. There is nothing wrong with going against colour consultant advice if it’s truly not what you want! If you’re using feature walls, be bold with your colours. Nothing gives a room a bit of life like a good dose of colour.

What was the biggest decorating, renovating or building challenge for this project?

Imagining how the feature walls would look, deciding where to do them and in which colours. Earl and I are both a touch indecisive; I think I ended up with 20 Resene testpots. To be fair, they were mainly greys!

Do you have a favourite colour, and if so why is it your favourite?

It would have to be navy; it’s so versatile. The Resene Midnight Express wall is my favourite in the house and I am planning to give the guest bedroom a makeover with a striped feature wall in this colour. We want to use this room for the nursery when our second child is ready (due August). It’s also gender neutral in my opinion, so will be easy to turn boyish or girly if we want.

The walls in the kitchen are Resene Half Rakaia, balanced by Resene Double Alabaster on the cabinets and around the subway tile splashback.

The feature wall in daughter Haidee’s room is in Resene Half Ashanti, chosen because it’s a calm gender-neutral colour and goes well with the other walls in Resene Quarter Rakaia.

Resene Half Ashanti was also chosen for the bathroom as a fun touch and to give a lift to the neutral-coloured fittings.

The desire for a romantic colour for the master bedroom feature wall ended up in Resene Fedora, a sophisticated muted purple.
