Scott and Vanessa's beautiful take on a rental reno

We don't often come across a beautiful rental renovation such as this one, especially when the reno has been undertaken by its tenants.

But when Scott and Vanessa moved into a rental property as a stop gap last year, they decided the house needed a makeover... on a budget of course, as it will return to the rental pool when they move out.

With the property belonging to Scott's parents, they were given freedom to renovate without too much restriction. The main fix was a full repaint of the house using Resene paint, bringing the 12-year-old rental back to life. It's become a perfect temporary home for Scott, Vanessa and their three kids.

Vanessa tells us more.

How did you decide on the overall look of the interiors?

When we moved in, the entire house (inside and out) was painted the same colour as the joinery, a darker cream, which meant that we had to be quite sympathetic with our choices of colour to match this. The previous tenant was also a hoarder and it hadn't been left in the greatest condition and so it needed a fresh start.

We chose to paint most of the house in Resene Atmosphere with Resene Half Pearl Lusta on the ceilings, doors and trims, a lovely, clean colour scheme.

What part of the house are you happiest with?

Scott and I each have an eight-year-old daughter from previous relationships, Charlotte and Molly. The girls share a room, which they love. It has a door which leads out to to the deck that wraps around the house. We're in the process of closing in a small portion of this so they have their own private outside retreat, where they can chill on their bean bags in the summer months.

What was the biggest renovating challenge for this project?

We still have a lot of work to do both inside (replacing bathrooms, carpets and tiles) and outside with finishing the painting, landscaping and covering in the deck. We're definitely getting there – three months of living in a house with two girls coming and going and being pregnant through the reno hasn't made it easy.

Is there anyone you would like to thank?

Scott has done an amazing job. I'm so proud of what he's achieved (as I wasn't able to climb ladders while pregnant). It's not a big house, but we love it and it's an ideal home for us right now.
