The magic of colour

07 Dec 2017

One minute, the room is all white; the next it’s covered in a blur of coloured dot stickers.

That’s The obliteration room, a dynamic artwork by leading contemporary Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama, on at the Auckland Art Gallery from this weekend until April 2018.

The room transforms over time through the active participation of visitors who are invited to enter the world of the artist and 'obliterate' an entirely white domestic space by adding colourful dot stickers to the furniture, objects and surfaces in this large-scale interactive installation.

The space gradually transforms through this interaction and the mass accumulation of coloured dots ultimately changes the white Resene painted interior into an extraordinary blur of colours.

Entry to The obliteration room is free. Visit www.aucklandartgallery.com for more information about the room and the revered artist behind it.
