Kirsty and James find joy in colour

Homeowners James and Kirsty are not shy of colour. Their mantra is ‘be brave’ and it’s one they’ve taken to heart when renovating their Wellington home, bestowing it with a bold palette of Resene colour.

The house is an early ex-State house, built in the 1930s. It’s larger than most, but with a growing family of three children, the couple built an addition, and refurbished virtually every room.

And at Christmas, they have reason to add even more exuberance and fun to their home… why have just one Christmas tree when you can have two, in pink and silver?

Kirsty tells us more:

How did you decide on the overall look of the interiors?

We love colour. We’re certainly not scared of it. Now we come home every day and the house makes us smile. It brings us a lot of joy. We prefer old to new but we’re not scared of new. It’s a matter of knowing when to use it.

I work in a hospice shop, so I enjoy upcycling old furniture. We entertain quite a lot, and we love to add opulent touches like the gold wallpaper and trims.

What part of the house are you happiest with?

The new kitchen and dining area works really well now. It flows together, then opens out through french doors to a courtyard, and the garden. The garden is quite beautiful and one of the reasons we love the property.

What is your advice for someone trying to achieve a similar look?

Don’t be scared of colour. People keep telling us how brave we are, but colour makes you smile. It makes such a difference.

What was the biggest decorating, renovating or building challenge for this project?

The biggest challenge was the timing of the different craftspeople. The carpet was laid before the walls were painted, the fireplace arrived two months after everything else was finished, trying to get plasterers and builders back was very difficult. They had rightly moved on! But it was worth all the frustration in the end.

Do you have a favourite colour, and if so why is it your favourite?

Blue – it reminds me of the sky and sea. Particularly the turquoise blues.
