Juliet and Colin's seaside dream come true

As a purchase, this Coromandel holiday home is what dreams are made of. Surrounded by native bush, panoramic views of Hahei Beach and Mercury Bay, and not much needed in the way of renovating, it was perfect for Juliet Small and Colin Tunnicliffe.

The couple bought the property last year, as a place to stay and spend quality time with family. Before inviting everyone over, they invested in painting the whole interior, using Resene colours chosen specially to enhance the stunning views and surrounds.

The main living areas and kitchen are painted in Resene Inside Back, bringing "the view closer" says Juliet. For the living room, they wanted an atmospheric, moody setting to set it apart from the rest of the house, painting Resene Sumptuous, a deep purple true to its name, as a feature wall next to Resene Inside Back. Together, the colours are a nice offset to the polyurethaned particle board flooring, an original feature of the 90s build.

Both of the bedrooms are magnets for the sun (once again, dream property) and painted in soft Resene Popcorn – “a sophisticated yellow” says Juliet. In a spot in the master bedroom that gets intense sun during the day, a feature wall painted in deeper Resene Sea Crest soaks up the rays.

Sticking with blues for the rest of the home, the couple used Resene Inside Back for the kitchen bench and master bedroom's ensuite, and Resene Half Duck Egg Blue in the laundry, toilet and bathroom – a fresh, reflective edge that's perfect for the limited light in the downstairs area, says Juliet.

“We are so thrilled with the impact of saturated colour!” she says.

Juliet tells us more.

What part of the bach are you most happy with?

We like the open plan, internal flow of the living areas and the intersection of colour with the corridor and bedrooms. We also love our Resene Sumptuous feature wall, as no one expects it in a beach house.

What is your advice for someone trying to achieve a similar look?

Good preparation before painting. Also, be confident with your colour selections, and work with what you have already in terms of furniture and family treasures.

What was the biggest decorating, renovating or building challenge for this project?

As we were only redecorating by painting the walls, we had the challenge of working with existing flooring, blinds and joinery. They were the starting point for the colour scheme.

Do you have a favourite colour?

I love Resene Inside Back...it is complex, moody and atmospheric, mirroring the beach environment well.

A feature wall painted in Resene Sumptuous sums up the personality of the living room.

Affectionately known as 'the frangipani room', the guest bedroom is painted in Resene Popcorn.

Sunny and welcoming, the master bedroom is also painted in Resene Popcorn. The ensuite is painted in Resene Kumutoto, once again a nod to the wondrous sea views.

Not to be outdone by the living room, the master bedroom boasts a feature wall in cerulean blue Resene Sea Crest.

Resene Inside Back is the dominant colour in the home, connecting the main living areas. The trims are painted in Resene Half Rice Cake throughout.

The downstairs laundry, toilet and bathroom are painted in Resene Half Duck Egg Blue. It was chosen because of its fresh, reflective edge to help combat the limited light in the area.
